|The Priest is an iconic class in World of Warcraft, as either a robust healer harnessing the Light to grant them immense holy power, or acting as a conduit of shadow magic to inflict pain and twist the minds of their enemies. As a healer, the Priest has a robust set of abilities which allow them to support their allies, but at a cost. Unlike more durable Druids, Shamans and Paladins, Priests wear cloth armor, offering them little protection from physical attacks.|
While avoiding as much direct damage as possible is paramount to surviving as a Priest, they do have spells that make them capable of mitigating damage, like, or buffing their damage and healing, like Power Infusion, Ultimately, a Priest’s healing ability and utility make them one of the most popular and desirable healing classes in SoM.

Because healing Priests are fairly robust in any given situation, they are high-value targets in PvP scenarios. Thankfully, the Priest does have some abilities to counter other casters. Priests can remove beneficial magic effects (like castable buffs) from enemy players or cure harmful magic effects cast on them or their allies using Purify,
Vulnerable to physical damage
Healing Priests, like other cloth-wearing casters, are especially fragile when it comes to physical damage. They have relatively low health pools and low armor, making them prime targets for high-damage melee classes. Priests are especially weak against classes like the Rogue, Druid and Hunter with their inability to handle stuns, bleeds and poison effects (short of the Dwarf ‘s Stoneform ability).
With a few exceptions like and, Priests must remain still to successfully cast their healing spells. That’s a notable problem in PvP situations where maneuverability is key. As such, they’re typically better off sticking with a group or a partner who can help the Priest escape a tough situation. Even some PvE encounters that require a fair amount of movement, like Onyxia or Ossirian the Unscarred, can hamper the Priests ability to heal effectively.
In total, there are five playable Priest races in WoW Classic — three Alliance and two Horde. Each race has two innate racial abilities which, depending on how you plan to play your character, can be an important part of character creation. The Dwarf offers the most impactful choices when it comes to healing as a Priest on the Alliance side. Although Human s may offer unique benefits in PvE situations, choosing a Dwarf crucially adds to the Priest’s survival kit. Dwarves are the only race in SoM that gets, an exceptionally useful spell in both PvP and PvE situations.
Especially with the new SoM encounter changes, Dwarf is by far the safest alliance pick. Apart from that, they also get and their Stoneform abilities. Human Priest Humans are usually one of the most robust races in any RPG, and that is the case in WoW Classic as well.
They have the most rounded stats of any race in the game, making them a good all-around choice for any class, let alone a Priest. If you aim to play as a healer, however, you do get some benefits by way of your racial abilities. The Human Spirit passively increases your Spirit stat by 5%, which increases your mana regeneration — a critical component to a healer’s longevity in a PvE fight.
However, Spirit is less useful in PvP situations, in which the Priest will likely have to cast often, mitigating much of this racial ability’s usefulness. Dwarf Priest Dwarven Priests are excellent PvP healers, as they are heartier than all other races by way of their high initial Stamina. Dwarves also have the Stoneform ability, which offers a substantial 10% armor buff. Apart from mitigating more physical damage, Stoneform also grants immunity to Bleed, Poison and Disease effects, mitigating effects from most physical DPS classes like Rogues, Druids, and Hunters.
The ability also lets you break out of a Rogue ‘s Blind, which allows the Priest a chance to escape or snap off a quick, potentially life-saving heal like, Dwarf is by far the best priest race for PvE content. Due to Dwarves having access to, they are by far the best alliance priest race as the spell is useful for plenty of PvE encounters, as well as PvP battles, and might even become more relevant with the new encounter changes.
Frost Resistance is situationally useful in PvP against the likes of Frost Mages, but is typically of little use in PvE situations until Phase 6. Other racial abilities include Find Treasure, which offers no healing benefit, and, which is only useful to Hunters.
Find Treasure : Allows the dwarf to sense nearby treasure, making it appear on the minimap Frost Resistance : Increases Frost Resistance by 10. : Guns skill increased by 5. Night Elf Priest While Humans and Dwarves offer racial abilities that are widely useful, Night Elves racial abilities are situationally useful, at best., for example, only allows the Priest to remain ‘stealthed’ as long as they don’t move or cast any spells.
It can be a good ability for supporting an ambush in PvP situations but offers little benefit in PvE. Nature Resistance can help a little bit against Rogues poisons and Hunter stings in PvP, as well as certain dungeon or raid encounters. Nature Resistance : Nature Resistance increased by 10. Wisp Spirit : Transform into a wisp upon death, increasing movement speed by 50%. Quickness : Dodge chance increased by 1%. : Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Night Elf Rogues and Druids with Shadowmeld are more difficult to detect while stealthed or prowling.
Horde players only have two race options for Priests: Undead or Troll. Unlike some Alliance races, neither of these two offer direct healing racial abilities. However, Trolls do have a ability, which allows faster casting (with a twist). Undead Priest s, on the other hand, offer better racial abilities if you plan on going Shadow and filling a DPS role with spells like, rather than healing.
The Troll offers a healing Priest more effective utility, although neither available Horde race has Priest -specific abilities that offer a massive advantage over the other in all situations. Since Trolls can use to their advantage for short periods and have more passive survivability by way of Regeneration, they are a slightly better option for healing.
Undead Priest The Undead, otherwise known as ‘the Forsaken’ have a more unique flavor than some of the other races in the game, given their creation myth. They also have the highest initial Spirit in the game, which marginally helps their longevity as healers in PvP encounters.
However, the rest of their racial abilities do little to stand out from that of their Troll counterparts. Will of the Forsaken is a situationally useful ability in both PvE and PvP situations, offering a counter to Charm, Fear and Sleep on a relatively short 2-minute cooldown. However, every other Priest racial ability carries little use as a healer.
Shadow Resistance gives a passive benefit in certain situations, such as countering Warlocks in PvP. Cannibalize is useful if you need to conserve mana, but most situations in which you can actually use it regularly also allow you the opportunity to recover health and mana through consumables.
Cannibalize : When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect. Shadow Resistance : Shadow Resistance increased by 10. Touch of the Grave : Underwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal. Will of the Forsaken : Provides immunity to Charm, Fear and Sleep while active. Priests are one of the most versatile and sought after casters, widely regarded as the premier healer, and one of the most formidable PvP classes. There are three specialization talent trees for SoM Priests: Discipline and Holy are healing-focused, while Shadow is DPS-focused. Discipline: Uses magic to buff their allies as well as heal their wounds.
The Power Infusion build focuses more on boosting raid performance at the expense of some of the Priest’s own healing power, placing Power Infusion on their highest DPS ally. This is the most common PVE healing build.

Both regular healing specializations are perfectly viable, even during progression. You can choose between the additional throughput and sustain of Deep Holy and the slight DPS boost of Power Infusion, depending on what you think provides more value to your raid.

In PvE situations like endgame raids, players will be able to craft items like the Field Repair Bot 74A to help their guildmates out by allowing them to repair without returning to town, which saves precious time in progression content. Apart from that, engineering also grants you access to other useful gadgets like the Dimensional Ripper – Everlook, the Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan or the Goblin Rocket Helmet,
Just like with Alchemy, Engineering typically makes more sense if you pair it with a gathering profession — in this case Mining, That way, you can gather the materials players need to craft their various gadgets, explosives, and trinkets. If you are solely engaged in PvE content, the other viable professions may make more sense to further your career as a healing Priest,
If you’re looking for something a bit different, though, Engineering has some unique tools that help you go the extra mile in either PvE or PvP scenarios. Most Priest players take Enchanting hand in hand with Tailoring, Whether you decide to heal primarily in PvE or PvP content, enchanters are able to enhance several gear slots in WoW Classic, giving this profession an edge over the others.
This profession is hugely useful while leveling, as you can use inexpensive, commonly available materials like dusts ( Light Illusion Dust, for example) and essences (like Greater Eternal Essence ) to augment your gear. Even better, taking Tailoring and Enchanting together makes the Priest self-sufficient when it comes to crafting and enhancing their gear, which can be expensive if you decide to go through the auction house instead.
Consumables are a massive part of the WoW experience, especially as it comes to raiding. From simple mana potions that restore vital mana points at crucial moments to elixirs and flasks that enhance your characters stats, Alchemy may be a worthwhile profession to consider. If you do plan on raiding, your guild may also require you to bring all the necessary consumables, and it’s always helpful if you can source them yourself.
However, be advised that this profession goes best with Herbalism, so you can pick all the herbs you need to craft your potions, elixirs, and flasks.As with other healing classes, Priests rely on mana to power almost every ability in their arsenal. Unlike rage or energy, mana does increase with level, giving the Priest a larger pool from which they can cast their spells.

Holy Vs Disc With 9.2 coming up I’m curious how the options are looking. I have a resto shaman and have played resto druid before off and on but i have never delved into the world of priests. I am looking to make one (the mogs are enough to keep me interested lol).
Even though I’ve never played a priest, the idea of disc has always sounded appealing. I do hear it gets boring, though, which surprises me. If you were going to roll a priest in anticipation of 9.2 which would you be more inclined to choose? The play would be largely PvE, I may occassionally do PvP but it isnt my main focus.
So, anything related to mythic +, raiding, etc is what I’m looking into. Interested to hear your opinions, thanks! I just started playing Holy and it’s incredible. They are HPS machines!!! If it’s like 9.1, I would have recommended Disc. for PvP and Holy for PvE. But that doesn’t mean either spec. isn’t viable in the other mode of play. Holy does quite well in PvP. Disc. in PvE, well, I’d say go for it if you really like the spec., do Mythic raids, or roll with organized groups in M+ where not a lot of damage is taken/no missed interrupts/high dps.
If you like a reactive healer with stronger triage single target healing and just a more mana efficient, pure healing spec., then Holy is the way to go. If you like a proactive healer doing damage to simultaneously blanket heal your allies for more modest amounts after putting Atonement on them, Disc.

- Hymn and salv work well in 30 man setting where disc can suffer, which is why disc is more a mythic spec then heroic normal spec 1 Like Holy is easier to play correctly (IMO), and is getting enormous buffs for next patch.

Whereas Disc. reaches it’s limit upon Atonements expiring before any healing can be done and continues to scale up to 20. I rarely join anything larger than 18 people and see them far less often than smaller group sizes. It generally gets laggy and turns into a cluster when it gets too large.

Why are people quoting out of context and/or ignoring it? Mathematically, how does the throughput of a fixed percentage HOT from a Heal on a single target in a 5 man group change in a 20 man group? How does Echo of Light affect any other core ability in different group sizes OUTSIDE of Hymn and Salvation? So. What’s the difference in the total Echo of Light between 6 successive casts of the same spell (Heal, Flash Heal, Renew, Prayer of Healing, Prayer of Mending, IDC what you pick) onto one target and a single spell cast successively on 6 different targets? What about 10 of those spells on one target or 1 single spell on 10 different people? Not sure what you are looking fro there but ive been drinking.
But i will try. If you cast like 2-3 flash, you have echo of light there, plus then a circle of healing, so suddenly you have 7-8 echos going, into a prayer of healing in 9.2. Echo of light can be your top heal as a rule and with divine hymn leaving echo on all 30 people it adds up to a lot So.
Don’t you guys know Echoes of Light work like Devouring Plagues in that any remaining damage, or in this case healing, over time will be added to a refreshed damage/healing over time effect? I personally love discipline and think it’s the most engaging spec in the game. It’s also the most rewarding spec to play well imo.
I have over 200 keys time over 15 and haven’t got bored yet. Groups are very different and having cooldowns like power infusion, mass dispel, divine star, and barrier is so nice Aedriel: I do hear it gets boring, though, which surprises me. It gets boring raiding for sure as disc–especially if you play with the same group all the time.
- You learn the boss fight and pattern, then rinse and repeat–and that gets dull.
- Because disc has mana issues you have to sit on your hands at times or you go oom, too, so people say disc can get very dull because of that.
- Basically, raiding, you end up pushing your buttons for certain things, and then you sit on your hands, then go again, or just smite between the dances.
Basically, you learn when to counter what, and then do it and then do your thing and then sit on your hands. Mind you, in my case, I have pugged a lot and when pugging found you can experiment a lot more vs with a guild that locks you into doing exactly this and exactly that.
Versus holy though, it is a lot more limited. With holy you have a lot more room to do things this or that way, but you often will not pump the damage you can as disc. So there is a trade off. Oh, another thing when comparing disc to holy is that holy is the most resilient of all healers. That is, they die the least of all healers.
Disc is actually the opposite–in that they die the most of all healers. As for the whys and wherefores, I am not completely sure, but think it is for a few reasons–like mobility and having a different spell set (holy has potent spells for saving anyone including yourself), but wont get into that unless you want my detailed thoughts on that.
- In the end, all healers can be dull though–once you learn the fight pattern.

And again, if you pug M+ it can be incredibly fun because you never know how things are going to go, and you get this added element of challenge because you have to adapt to the different groups. While some find this a problem, you sound like you are like me and like that.
That said, unfortunately, disc does not pump the damage of the meta healers, h pala and r shammy. And there is something of a stigma when it comes to inviting priests. Hence, if you pug, while it can be more fun than meta, you tend to get less and less fast invites the higher the key. Also, I think holy is terrible in M+.
It was fun in BFA when you could pump healing with Prayer of Healing and dps a lot between casts while Echo of Light was ticking. Now you are simply a spot healer with Flash Concentration–which I personally can’t stomach because of how dull it gets. Honestly if we had a better way to apply atonement (cough) PLEA (cough) it wouldnt feel so awkward in raids.
I’ve always looked at holy as the big cd burst healing that compares to shaman and druids. Disc has always felt like the sustain healing class. just applying atonement and passively healing as the fight goes on. I like that, but not everyone does. It really depends on your healing style! I prefer Holy because it is more reactive, whereas Disc is primarily prevention.
You have to really pay attention to the fight and there is a higher risk of wiping if you miss a big hit of damage. On 9.2 that will mostly depend on how the new patch mechanics will balance the classes:
Tier sets Double legendary
Havent checked holy on PTR but it looks a bit like the tier set and talent changes may shift the class to a different legendary (for raids). On the current tier, for raids holy is probably the weaker output healer (resto druid and mistweaver does better) – but still a good healer.
Disc looks great for raids on 9.2 (both tier sets and legendary interactions are good). The new upgrades point to more frequent ramps or even more unpredictable cooldown management. Which fixes a big issue on the current tier: low healing outside of ramps, and boring gameplay. New disc tier also does a decent buff on damage (for m+).
Holy is the way to go man, I couldn’t play anything else. I’m at 238 ilvl right now and am getting to the point where I feel like a god 1 Like The thing about disc is the damage. Also the damage prevention and reduction. Also, the absorb factor. The four of them make them meta in raids.

- There is a drawback however: because they’re doing so well there’s an overabundance of them meaning you’ll get declined much more as a paladin than as a priest.

I think priest is one of the worst classes for beginners. Disc is a unique and high skill spec, shadow depends on knowing how to maximize your dps within a tight CD window, and while holy is fairly simple, it’s also squishy and easy to underperform with.
- Pally for beginners and expert players alike is a stronger class.
- They don’t really need a PvP nerf though.
- Paladins are pretty easy to learn, two specs of Priests require skills.
- Paladin is a very popular class.
- If you want to stand out, then Priest is your answer.

Paladin is sought after as a healer in arenas. Both have 3 strong specs atm. They’re both top tier. Paladin by a mile, I have both.8 second immunity, can heal literally forever and not run out of mana (which is a huge problem on priests, their mana absolutely sucks this expansion), in plate instead of a paper bag, utility far beyond healing with freedom, sacrifice, etc.

Playstyle & Rotation – The Holy Priest is a relatively straightforward healer, with no ramp mechanic, and nearly only reactive healing, making the spec relatively easy to handle in the first place. Even though proactivity is not that much needed, there are still things that can be said about the spec, and both of the types of builds we saw earlier (AoE & Single Target) will be discussed for raids, on top of some M+ notes.
- In terms of defensives, thanks to Translucent Image, your Fade will act as a very short-cooldown defensive.
- It won’t save you from insane damage inputs, but the fact that you can press it every 20 to 30 seconds, it has to be used and overused on nearly every raid-wide mechanic.
- Protective Light is a very strong addition to the toolkit since it will give you the same reduction without any cooldown.
Since it’s tied to Flash Heal, do note that Binding Heals will work, too, in this situation, allowing you to cast it on any target you want while still giving you the damage reduction buff. On top of that, you obviously still have your Desperate Prayer available, increasing your maximum health.
- Whatever the build you choose, even if it’s a heavy-healing build without talents such as Empyreal Blaze, try to keep casting Holy Fire on cooldown during any encounter, or as much as possible, on top of maintaining Shadow Word: Pain,
- The requirement is not super heavy, whether it’s in term of mana or GCD commitment, since you don’t have ramp windows, and the DPS gain will be noticeable.
Weave-in some Smite s when you have downtimes after that if you can.

- Gearing is quite simple as a levelling Holy Priest with the value of Intellect being high.
- Your focus should be on obtaining as much Intellect on gear as possible which means typically prioritizing item level.
- Intellect increases the amount of damage your spells do as well as how much healing they do.
Secondary stats provide a similar benefit but significantly less power while levelling and can largely be ignored. As a Priest, your weapon’s contribution to your damage and healing is through the Intellect it provides. Focusing on wearing the weapon combination, either staff or main-hand/off-hand, with the most total intellect should be your priority.3.

Why is dwarf priest best?
How important is Dwarf for Priest, really? Is it worth burning a 58 boost on a 2nd Priest just to go Dwarf? Does it really make that huge of a difference in PvP? If its the difference between surviving a Rogue/Mage opener, and dying in a Rogue/Mage opener, I think that alone could be worth it but I’m not sure just how much it helps in those scenarios.1 Like Play what ever you like, its a video game.

- Dwarf priests are good in classic due to fear ward, In tbc, not as important or optimal though aside from some immunities.
- But play what you want but be warned, people might check gear of freshly boosted characters and not just let you raid.
- Fear Ward is given to all priests in 2.3.0, so realistically you’ll have that which was/is the main reason to go dwarf priest in Classic.
Personally I like the human racial the most, Perception. Timed properly, this can give you a great opportunity to break the enemy rogue out of stealth which has led to me winning a ton of games (on the current pserver I play on).
- Also you get the 10% rep bonus which is just really nice for TBC with all the rep grinds.
- Finally, if you plan on playing into WotLK Classic you’ll get Every Man for Himself, which is the reason to go Alliance in PvP.

1 Like Perception is just okay, unless you’re a human rogue then its much better. Dwarf is best for disc pvp by far. For shadow pvp theres a little more room to choose race, but dwarf is still good for them. Stoneform is going to be really strong to get rid of viper sting and wound poison, chastise (will break shadowform since its holy) and desperate prayer all too good.

(Night Elf): Earned at level 10, this is a channeled damage spell. (Undead): Earned at level 10, this is a buff that decreases the attackers damage by a flat amount when struck in combat, and deals a small bit of damage. (Human): Earned at level 20, this spell is a defensive cooldown that will Mana Burn any enemies who cast spells on you while it’s active. (Dwarf): Earned at level 20, this is the most useful out of all the Priest Racials, this spell gives the Priest the ability to prevent the next fear effect on their target. The thirty-second cooldown combined with the ten minute duration also mean that you can start pre-casting this very early. Very useful in both PVE and PVP. (Troll): Earned at level 20, this will deal shadow damage to any attacker who hits you. (Night Elf): Earned at level 20, this is a unique defensive cooldown for Night Elf Priests. There are two primary sources of wands on a fresh server, enchanting and questing. Wands are essential for Priests at low levels, and as explained in the Priest Leveling Talents section, is an important early talent pick, which can increase your Wand Damage up to 25%.

- Gear upgrades are not as important on a Priest, as you should be damaging and wanding mobs, but as covered in the Stats section, Spirit is useful as it scales the talent,
- Healing Set for Leveling Priests Keeping a healing gear set in your bags is something every Priest should do while leveling.
Healing gear consists of three primary things, a lot of Intellect, as much “Mana per 5” as possible, and any bonus Spell healing. Items like Ghostweave Belt, Earth Warder’s Vest, and Spellforce Rod are some examples. If you’re looking to get a wand early on in Season of Mastery, then you’re going to want to look into enchanting.
Lesser Magic Wand is the earliest wand you can pick up; it requires 10 skill in enchanting and is created by Lesser Magic Wand, This item is generally pretty cheap on a developed server; you can probably find this on the auction house for just a few silver. If you’re on a fresh server, you may have to invest some time and resources into leveling enchanting in order to get this wand.
Greater Magic Wand is a better version of the previous wand but also takes a bit more effort as it requires to reach 70 enchanting skill to craft it. If you aren’t leveling on a fresh server and the auction house has had time to develop, you will be able to purchase this item relatively cheap as well.
As you reach the 10-19 zones, you’ll start to discover quests that give you a wand as a reward, if you’re speed leveling and not trying to level up your professions in order to get one you will want to rush these quests. Some of the earlier questing wands for each faction include:When leveling, wand upgrades will be very impactful for Priests due to the sheer number of times you find yourself wanding mobs to conserve mana, thus, always having the best-possible wand can make your leveling experience much easier and faster.For DPSing and questing in general, you’ll be usually fine always going for Wands that have a higher DPS stat, so you can use that as a rule to see if a weapon is an upgrade or not.In our Priest Weapons guide, we list all popular Wands and their levels/requirements, either for being Quest Rewards, easily crafted by professions, or easy drop from popular dungeons.

Spirit: Your best leveling talent is, and as such, you should play to your strengths. By stacking a lot of Spirit, you will reduce the amount of time you would spend drinking while leveling. Spell Power: You probably won’t come across many items with Spell Power while leveling but, it’s worth noting that you should consider wearing any piece of Spell Power gear you come across. Intellect: Increases your total Mana pool, as well as providing you with some spell crit. Stamina: Increases total health points.
Although there are many professions to choose from, some can give a Priest a bit of an edge. Many choose to go Tailoring, With Tailoring, a Priest can craft many helpful pieces of gear to aid them in leveling, as well as help get them geared with Pre-raid BiS gear such as Truefaith Vestments,
Although you can pair your Tailoring with other professions, Enchanting complements it nicely because as you level up your Tailoring and craft additional items, you can use your Disenchant skill from Enchanting for additional materials. Also, in a Dungeon Cleave group, you’ll find no shortage of Cloth or items to disenchant.
For pure raid benefit, there is nothing that beats Engineering as it allows you to use powerful explosives like Goblin Sapper Charge or to increase raid DPS and also grants you access to many other useful gadgets such as Field Repair Bot 74A, Dimensional Ripper – Everlook and Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan,
- If you’re looking to just make money, oftentimes players will choose a gathering profession such as Herbalism, Mining or Skinning,
- An alternative for regeneration is bandages from – Bandages will regenerate a certain amount of health over 8 seconds, have a very short cooldown of 1 minute, and can be created very easily using cloth that you can obtain while leveling.

If you’re coming to Season of Mastery from any recent expansion for that matter, there are going to be some changes in your questing experience that you will want to be ready for:
Quests and Objectives are not displayed on the map. To put it: you will have to do some exploring. You will get lost at some point during a quest, and you might have to read the actual quest or go to an external website to find out what you are supposed to be doing. While there are plenty of leveling addons for SoM, part of the game “experience” is feeling immersed in the world and creating an adventure of your very own. Zones don’t guarantee a certain amount of levels: Once again, coming from one of the later expansions, you might be used to finishing a zone (Vol’Dun for instance) and expecting to be two levels higher. In SoM, the difficulty of zones vary, and especially as a Priest, you will want to do a lower difficulty quest. You’ll find yourself bouncing between a few zones at any given level range.
While questing is all about opportunity, exploration, and competition, you should be familiar with some of the better zones for each faction:
Darkshore (11-19): Once you complete the starting area for your particular race, you begin to have options of where to go, where to quest, and for Alliance, in particular, one of the best early game zones is Darkshore. Loch Modan (10-18): Second to Darkshore would be the Gnome/Dwarf 10-18 zone of Loch Modan. The zone isn’t as rich as Darkshore, but, it has some relatively easy quests. This is a good place to come back to and complete the quests once you out-level the content. Westfall (9-18): While these initial questing zones come down to preference, I would not suggest Westfall as a zone in regards to difficulty. However, if you have a group of friends you are leveling with, and you want to go into Deadmines for a quest run and get some higher item level rewards, this zone is worth considering. Redridge Mountains (15-25): This is the level range where you will have to bounce between zones of equal difficulty if you want to fill your quest bar from questing alone. Forming an efficient route of the next few zones will be important to increase your leveling speed. Duskwood (20-30): This is probably one of my favorite zones; it’s full of quests, full of flavor, and has a lot of solid upgrades. Don’t miss out on this zone if you play Alliance. Wetlands (20-30): This is probably the last “Alliance only” zone, from here on out you will enter into zones that are contested by both Horde and Alliance.
Northern Barrens (10-33): This is the big one, as it is the meeting point for three of the four races of the Horde, this zone has no shortage of quests and will easily propel you toward level 20. As great as this zone is, be ready to compete for mob tags, as there will be a lot of players funneled into this one zone. Silverpine Forest (10-20): This is the Undead version of The Barrens; it has some decent quests to complete, but, I usually don’t end up coming here at all. Stonetalon Mountains (15-25): Although this zone offers Alliance quests, it is almost entirely a Horde zone. This zone is fantastic as it is right next to the Barrens, and the level range of the two zones overlap.
Hillsbrad Foothills (20-31): Home to the infamous Southshore vs. Tarren Mill world PvP spot, this zone has a lot of good quests for both Alliance and Horde and is usually worked into most people’s leveling routes. Ashenvale (19-30): Another flavorful zone as this is the home to what will become Warsong Gulch, plenty of quests for both Alliance and Horde. Thousand Needles (24-35): Home to the infamous Shimmer Flats, this is a great zone for both factions to get almost an entire level. It also has a questing hub for Horde. Northern Stranglethorn (30-50): probably one of the most infamous zones in the whole of World of Warcraft, you will be coming to this zone off and on from level 30 and up towards level 50. Desolace (30-39): Home of the dungeon Maraudon, this is one of my favorite zones in the game, and I spend many levels here. There are both Horde and Alliance quest hubs here. Arathi Highlands (30-40): This zone is home to the 2nd battleground Arathi Basin, there are two hubs here (one for each faction), and there are plenty of good kill quests here. Badlands (36-45): This is a quick and dirty zone, while it only has a hub for Horde; it is a quick level, and if you have enough players around your level you can do an Uldaman quest run. Tanaris (40-50): Home to the dungeon Zul’Farrak, I recommend questing here as well as doing a full quest run of ZF. Feralas (41-60): This is one of the less popular zones for people to quest at, it’s worth coming here in your early 40s as there are plenty of quests for both factions. Searing Gorge (43-56): This zone is particularly exciting because you get your first taste of the end-game, On one side of Blackrock Mountain is a lower level zone with various quests coming from the Thorium Brotherhood. Burning Steppes (50-59): The other side of Blackrock Mountain, this is a higher level zone and has hubs for both Horde and Alliance, you will probably come to this zone a couple of times as the level range is quite large. Some dungeon quests come from this zone. Felwood (47-54): This zone is a must-complete for me as the quests are quite good and you will need to come here to get your Cenarion Beacon, which is needed to farm various consumables like Whipper Root Tuber, Un’Goro Crater (48-55): This is another hot zone as it has a plethora of quests and will get you nearly two levels from completing the crater. Western Plaguelands (46-57): This zone is excellent for quick leveling, as you can complete the “cauldron” questline for massive amounts of experience. It’s worth noting that you need a breadcrumb quest from your faction’s major city. Eastern Plaguelands (54-59): Home to the legendary Naxxramas, this zone gives you another taste of the end-game immediately upon questing. You will spend a lot of time here even at max level. Winterspring (55-60): This is an amazing zone, it has a ton of quests that give a ton of experience, and you can get Cache of Mau’ari, allowing you to farm Jujus, a very good consumable for raids.

While leveling in Classic, often you’ll find quests for dungeons appropriate for your level. Classic doesn’t have quality of life improvements like Dungeon finder or Group Finder, so players must use default chat channels like General or LookingForGroup to find groups for dungeons. We have guides for all dungeons in Classic to help you in your journey.One aspect of Classic leveling that many players, especially retail players, often forget is bag space.
Unlike when you start a new expansion, starting in Classic means you only have your default backpack available, with meager 14 items lots.To ease that off, there are some bags that you can easily obtain at the start of the game:
Linen Bag – Created by Tailors. Requires Tailoring skill level 45 and takes 6x Linen Cloth, obtained from Humanoid enemies, and 3x Coarse Thread, purchasable at Tailoring supplies vendors, If you have the necessary materials, try asking in General Chat or Trade Chat if any Tailor could help you making that bag. If you find someone, make sure to tip them for their help!
Small Brown Pouch – Dropped by many different humanoid mobs and sold by select vendors in early game for around, Kodo Hide Bag – Created by Leatherworkers. Requires Leatherworking skill level 40 and is learned from Pattern: Kodo Hide Bag, which is only sold by a Horde vendor.

Quality of Life changes have been implemented over the years: If you are coming from any more modern expansion, there are going to be a lot of not-so-friendly changes that make questing harder, or at least take more time. Quests and objectives won’t be marked on your map, so you will have to do a lot more exploring. There won’t be a steady stream of quests from 1-60, so you will have to combine questing and grinding enemies for the experience to level. There’s no AoE looting, and quest items take space in your bags. Cooldown abilities are available much less frequently, and there’s significantly less personal healing, which adds much more downtime in between pulls as you sit and eat or use First Aid/Alchemy to heal. Playing efficiently is the best thing you can do to speed up your leveling. Spirit Tap and Wand Specialization are must have Talents: Both of these Talents combine to make the Priest Class one of the most efficient levelers in the game. While not the fastest overall, the Priest doesn’t have to completely stop very often to sit down to eat and drink. These two talents are without a doubt the most important for the leveling process. Buy abilities only when needed: A lot of people don’t think it is possible to afford a mount by level 40, in reality, it’s much easier as long as you only buy the necessary spell upgrades to save money. It’s also worth noting that following this guide for buying spells will save you a lot of travel time as flights back to major cities or your questing hub can take a lot of time away from leveling. Wand upgrades are significant for Priests: Priests have the most diverse toolkit of any healing class in SoM but, your biggest upgrade for leveling will come in the form of a wand with higher DPS. When killing an enemy you will want to Shadow Word: Pain it, and Shoot it, rather than cast spells. In doing this, you will save a lot of mana and be able to level more effectively.

And if it is not the case, why must an oathbreaker select an deity (and presumably worship that deity) in order to attone for their sins and once again swear their sacred oath? i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes #2 Jul 17, 2020 A Paladin does not need to have any faith whatsoever in 5e. In older editions they did, but in 5e they swear an Oath to the universe so powerful that they are granted special powers. That Oath can de to a specific deity, but doesn’t have to.

Come Burning Crusade, Blood Elves easily became the best Horde race for priests. This is due to their racial abilities providing the best mana efficiency in the game. Their unique priest racial ability, Consume Magic, allows them to dispel one of their own personal priest buffs to regain some mana.
The buff selected is random, so you can’t rig it to get rid of your least useful one. However, proc effects are not selected, so don’t worry about those. Additionally, building up to three stacks of Mana Tap before activating Arcane Torrent gets you back a decent chunk of mana and silence hit enemies as well.
If the fight you’re in has dangerous casters, we recommend saving it primarily for the silence effect.

There are lots of reasons you might want to play a Priest. Perhaps you like the idea of smiting your enemies (sure, you can pick fights with any class, but you have to be a Priest to do any literal smiting).
Perhaps you want to melt faces (no class does it better!). Perhaps you want to help your groupmates by providing healing (Vampiric Embrace is healing, right?). Or maybe you enjoy the god-like feeling of being completely in control of which members of your party live or die. Before we talk about the best way to level a new Priest, however, let’s talk about what Priests can do – and whether the class is right for you.
Then, if you’re really convinced a Priest is the way to go, we’ll talk about picking the right race (with race-specific class skills, this can be an important choice for a Priest) and getting started. What the heck can a Priest do? Priests can fill two essential roles:
Healing : Priests don’t have the best survivability or mana efficiency, but they are very versatile healers with a variety of abilities to fit any situation. Other healing classes have their specialties, but Priests are the jack-of-all-trades of healing classes, with direct healing, heals over time, damage shields, and useful buffs. DPS : Though a properly specced holy/discipline Priest can put out reasonable DPS, shadow spec is where it’s at. Shadow Priests put out DPS while healing and restoring mana to their party.
In either role, a Priest can be an asset to a PvE or PvP group – but either way, their utility means they work best in a group environment. (Yes, all types of Priests can solo in PvE or PvP, but they really shine in group settings.) Plus, healers are always in demand! (And if you’re really in need of an instance, even a DPS specced Priest can be an acceptable healer – just don’t try to main heal a heroic dungeon, and chances are you’ll be fine.) What’s it like to level a Priest? Priests aren’t the fastest levelers, no matter how you spec them.
- Up to level 40, you’ll find your Priest to kill and advance more slowly than average.
- After 40, a Shadow Priest can pick up shadowform – and the increase in both damage and survivability results in a noticeable improvement in leveling speed.
- However, even if you want to stick with a healing build, healing Priests have the abilities (and talent options) to solo at a reasonable pace.
(It’s still slower than average, but it’s completely doable.)A healing Priest may also be able to do a good amount of leveling in dungeons or in groups, which you may find faster and more efficient than leveling solo. However, this is completely dependent on the quality of the group – leveling up with friends will be fast and fun, while leveling up with PuGs will be slow and agonizing.
So, you still want to play a Priest? The first step to creating your new Priest is choosing a race. Racial selection is a bit more important for a Priest than for other classes, as the Priest class has a selection of skills unique to players of a specific race (each race has two abilities, the first at level 10 and the second at level 20).
So when considering a race, you need to take into account not only their standard racial abilities, but also their class racial abilities. Alliance players may chose from four races: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, and Draenei. Horde players may chose from three races: Undead, Troll, and Blood Elf.
(Human, Dwarf): An instant-cast, mana-free self-heal on a 10-minute cooldown. An excellent skill for soloing or saving yourself in any emergency situation. If you want to play an Alliance Priest, this skill should make you strongly lean towards Human or Dwarf. You receive the first rank at level 10 (healing for 134 to 170 health) and the last rank at level 66 (healing from 1601 to 1887). (Troll): A curse that reduces healing and damage done by the target. This is a situationally useful spell that provides a small benefit. It’s okay, but not a must-have. You receive the first rank at level 10 (reducing damage done by 2 and healing received by 20%) and the last rank at level 70 (reducing damage done by 35 and healing received by 20%). (Night Elf): a DoT doing arcane damage to the target. Though it’s not a terrible thing to have an extra damage spell in your arsenal while leveling, it’s not going to make or break your character. You receive the first rank at level 10 (doing 60 damage over 15 seconds) and the last rank at level 66 (doing 785 damage over 15 seconds). (Draenei): regenerates mana for 15 seconds for the Priest’s entire party on a 5-minute cooldown. (Symbol of Hope is considered a Discipline ability and is thus castable in Shadowform.) A great group utility skill, even at high levels. You receive Symbol of Hope at level 10 and though there’s only one rank, the ability scales with level, from 33 mana per 5 seconds at level 10 to 333 mana per 5 seconds at level 70. (Undead, Blood Elf): A debuff that reduces damage done and does shadow damage to its target whenever the target melees the Priest. It’s nice for soloing and okay for PvP, but it’s not a make or break ability. You receive the first rank at level 10 (reducing damage done by 2 and damaging the target by 8 whenever the target melees the Priest) and the last rank at level 70 (reducing damage done by 35 and damaging the target by 80 whenever the target melees the Priest). (Dwarf, Draenei): Does holy damage and stuns the target for 2 seconds (the stun breaks on damage) – only works on humanoids. Extra damage certainly can’t hurt for leveling and the stun can buy you time to heal or escape, if necessary – but it does relatively low damage for a relatively high mana cost and is only usable on a small subset of mobs in the game. Again, not a skill that will make or break you. You receive the first rank at level 20 (doing 47 – 53 damage) and the last rank at level 70 (doing 370 – 430 damage). (Blood Elf): Dispels one beneficial effect from the caster and, in exchange, restores mana, on a 2 minute cooldown. There’s only one rank, trained at level 20,but the mana returned increases with level. There’s a lot of argument as to how useful this ability is. On one hand, sometimes the extra mana means the difference between casting the heal that saves the group and watching the tank die before your eyes. On the other hand, the buff Consume Magic removes (and it is random – though it will only chose Priest buffs) may be needed. Depending on your play style, you may or may not appreciate this skill. (Undead): A DoT that does shadow damage to the target and heals the caster, on a 3 minute cooldown. An excellent ability (though the cooldown significantly restricts its use) for leveling or DPSing. You receive the first rank at level 20 (doing 152 damage over 24 seconds) and the last rank at level 68 (doing 1216 damage over 24 seconds). (Night Elf): Reduces the Priest’s chance to be hit by melee and ranged attacks by 20% for 15 seconds, on a 3 minute cooldown. There’s only one rank, first received at level 20. It’s okay for PvP and soloing, but nothing spectacular. (Human): A buff that burns mana and does damage (equal to the amount of mana burned) to any target hitting the Priest. Lasts 15 seconds on a 3-minute cooldown. Rather situational, and the short duration/long cooldown makes it fairly useless. (Troll): A self-buff that does damage to anyone who hits the Priest.3 charges. An okay ability, though the limited charges mean you’re casting it constantly if you’re trying to use it. The first rank is received at level 20 (doing 20 damage per hit) and the last rank is received at level 68 (doing 130 damage per hit)
Out of these options, Human, Dwarf, and Draenei are all strong choices for the Alliance (with Desperate Prayer providing Humans and Dwarves an advantage in leveling and solo-play, while Symbol of Hope provides Draenei with an excellent end-game buff ability) with Undead likely being the best choice for the Horde (Undead have no group utility abilities, but their racials will be of help when soloing).However, in the long run, most of these abilities will not make your class significantly easier or significantly harder to play.
- If you have a strong preference towards a particular race – go for it! You’ll still be able to Priest effectively.
