Warlocks are typically assigned a specific curse to maintain in each encounter/raid, with the best geared player prioritizing Curse of Agony and sometimes Corruption in order to proc Nightfall, all of which greatly inflate that player’s damage relative to other Warlocks in their raid.
- This creates a large disparity between the top and bottom performers, as they not only benefit from better gear, but also the ability to use more damaging spells.

Four races can be Warlocks in WoW Classic: Gnome and Human for the Alliance, and Orc and Undead for the Horde. Gnome is the best Classic WoW Alliance Warlock race for both PvE and PvP. The primary benefit of raiding on Alliance is being able to raid with Paladins.
Paladins have multiple impactful buffs for a Warlock such as Greater Blessing of Kings, Greater Blessing of Wisdom, and Greater Blessing of Salvation, The main attribute that impacts a warlock’s damage output gain from Greater Blessing of Kings is Intellect.10% more intellect not only increases your chance to receive a critical strike (60 int =1% crit) but also increases the warlock’s overall mana pool.
Furthermore, since this buff gives a percentage increase, it gains more and more value, the more geared the warlock player gets. Greater Blessing of Wisdom will lower the number of times a warlock will have to cast Life Tap, Not only does this save some healer mana throughout the clearing of a raid, but it also lowers the number of global cooldowns (1.5 seconds) the warlock receives from using Life Tap,
Fewer globals spent on life tap means more time to cast damaging spells. Greater Blessing of Salvation is the most impactful of the paladin buffs for a warlock. Warlocks have no way to reduce threat other than Master Demonologist, which sacrifices many impactful talents to obtain. Moreover, warlocks are capable of producing some of the highest crits in Classic WoW since there are many debuffs to increase shadow damage.

For these reasons, threat reduction from Greater Blessing of Salvation is extremely valuable to a warlock. If a warlock still produces a concerning amount of threat, Paladins have even MORE ways to help. Blessing of Protection can save a warlock’s life when they accidentally over aggro, or can allow a warlock player to play even more aggressively! Gnomes are hands down the best race in the game for Warlock PvE due to to their ability, Expansive Mind,
- Although this passive racial ability is not game-breaking, it will affect the warlock at all times in PvE as opposed to other races that have abilities that are situational.
- Engineering Specialization also makes a minor impact when raiders use engineering pets from trinkets such as Gnomish Battle Chicken and Arcanite Dragonling,
If a gnome takes the time to level their engineering to 315 these two pets will be level 63 when summoned, instead of 60. Not to mention that Escape Artist is fantastic in PvP!Racial Bonuses The Human Spirit is the only racial ability from humans that affects a Warlock in pve.
However, the Spirit gained is not significant since warlock gear does not have much, if any spirit at all. Furthermore, many warlocks will be raiding with the “Demon Sacrifice/Ruin” talent build, which has Demonic Embrace, lowering a warlock’s spirit even further. Lastly, humans have Perception for PvP, but it does not stack with similar effects such as Detect Greater Invisibility and Paranoia,
Making it not too significant. Racial Bonuses Undead is marginally better than Orc as the best Classic WoW Horde Warlock race for PvE, while Undead and Orc are equal in PvP, providing benefits against different matchups. Warlock players deciding to join the Horde are able to gain benefits that a Shaman player can provide.
Shamans are capable of supplying warlocks with Mana Spring Totem, Tranquil Air Totem, and even Mana Tide Totem if the Shaman is specced into it! Unfortunately, warlocks tend to have a disadvantage in PvE on Horde because the totems that a shaman puts down are limited to only buffing the members of the party in which the shaman is placed.
Meaning, if there is ever a lack of shamans in the raid group, then shamans will be prioritized towards melee groups over caster groups since Windfury Totem makes such a large impact on raid performance. Whenever this happens, warlock players will quickly become threat-capped, limiting their damage output.
Luckily both Horde races that can choose warlock as a class have great racial abilities for PvP. Orcs do not have many significant abilities for Warlocks in raids. The only racial orcs have that does impact a warlock’s gameplay is Command, However, this racial is only beneficial under certain conditions.
First, the warlock would have to be raiding with the “Shadow Mastery/Ruin” talent build since the alternative, “Demonic Sacrifice/Ruin” build opts to sacrifice their pet. Next, the warlock would only be allowed to use their Summon Imp to DPS on fights where it is able to survive.
There are many fights with AoE damaging effects, such as Vaelastrasz the Corrupt, where your imp will die if not in Phase Shift, Then, if all of those conditions are met, your imp will do 5% more damage. One could argue that Hardiness could contribute to raid performance. However, there are very few stunning effects in Classic WoW raids, and the ones that are present can be completely avoided if the warlock player positions themselves correctly.
However, Hardiness is incredible in almost all PvP scenarios! Some Rogues despise the stun resistance of orcs so much that they avoid fighting Orc warlocks completely!
Axe Specialization – Skill with Axes and Two-Handed Axes increased by 5. Blood Fury – Increases base melee attack power by 25% for 15 sec and reduces healing effects on you by 50% for 25 sec. Command – Damage dealt by Hunter and Warlock pets increased by 5%. Hardiness – Chance to resist Stun effects increased by an additional 25%.
There are two situational racial abilities that benefit Undead Warlocks in a raid. These two abilities are Will of the Forsaken and Shadow Resistance, Let’s start by discussing the benefits of Will of the Forsaken, There are multiple boss encounters in Classic WoW that have AoE-fearing effects.
- Some can be avoided without any DPS loss, and some are very difficult to avoid without losing DPS.
- During these encounters, Undead warlocks can use their Will of the Forsaken to completely avoid one fear, allowing the undead warlock to continue to DPS for 4+seconds (depending on the encounter) while Orc warlocks will be stuck in fearing effects.
The faster that these sorts of bosses are defeated, the more of an impact Will of the Forsaken will have on the DPS meters. Will of the Forsaken is also instrumental in PvP, allowing Undead warlocks to have an extreme advantage versus any Warlock of another race! Shadow Resistance, while only minimally, helps warlocks reduce shadow damage taken from some bosses that can cast damaging shadow abilities.
Cannibalize : When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect. Shadow Resistance : Shadow Resistance increased by 10. Underwater Breathing : Underwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal. Will of the Forsaken : Provides immunity to Charm, Fear and Sleep while active. May also be used while already afflicted by Charm, Fear or Sleep. Lasts 5 sec.
Classes in Classic WoW will earn a total of 51 talent points, allowing them to take talents from multiple trees, though most builds typically invest the majority of their points in one tree, while taking only select bonuses in the others. Warlocks are a somewhat special case in that they frequently skip the bottom-most talents in order to better hybridize among all three talent trees, though several viable talent combinations still exist, depending on whether the player is interested in PvE or PvP.
Shadow Mastery/Ruin builds bring utility, multiple DoTs and, use a pet while raiding, often to increase the health of group tanks. A similar build exists for PvP which sacrifices tankiness for better sustain and damage potential.
Demonology: A master of demons who compels demonic powers to aid them.
Master Demonologist builds are useful for raiding Warlocks who find themselves continually needing to stop DPS in order to manage their threat, allowing them to deal more damage than they otherwise would if their tank was unable to keep up. It also forgoes sacrificing their pet for damage, allowing it to benefit the party instead. Ideally, you should never have to resort to this build.
Destruction: A master of chaos who calls down fire to turn and demolish enemies.
Conflagrate builds are the most fragile, but highest damage potential PvP builds, able to burst full health players to dust in a matter of seconds, excelling in duels and other 1v1 situations, though susceptible to being ganged up on and taken down easily in team fights.
Hybrid : As stated, Warlocks are a special case in that they frequently abstain from using the 31 point talent in any particular tree, instead of spreading their points more evenly.
The Demonic Sacrifice build is the strongest single target spec (if no movement is involved), revolving around sacrificing their Succubus pet in order to deal 15% more shadow damage. It has several drawbacks, however precluding the use of a pet, which can be an important buff for raid tanks, and less cleave damage compared to the SM Ruin build.
Affliction is the best Warlock spec for early Classic WoW, as players will use a Shadow Mastery / Ruin (30/0/21) for maximum performance. It has the benefit of being well-performing in solo content, cleave damage, fights with forced movement, and holds its own in PvP.
A more-uncommon Warlock spec is Demonology, running a Demonic Sacrifice / Ruin (9/21/21) build. This spec used to be the best performing with limited access to debuff slots. This is no longer the case. DS Ruin still provides the highest single target DPS as long as there is no forced movement, this is also known as a “Patchwork style” fight.
They can also provide different ranks of Major Healthstone thanks to their talents. Viable end-game PvE builds are covered in our Classic Warlock DPS Talents & Builds Guide, No matter the class you choose to play, you can go with any professions you’d like.
However, some professions give you slight edges over others. The professions PvE Warlocks want are Engineering and Tailoring, There are a few items from different phases of content that are best in slot but require Tailoring. Phase 1: Robe of the Void, crafted from Pattern: Robe of the Void (an extremely rare drop from Darkmaster Gandling ), is the best in slot chest piece until the warlock player either receives Robe of Volatile Power that drops in Molten Core or Bloodvine Vest in phase 4.
Robe of the Void cannot be crafted unless the player has 300/300 tailoring. It is important to note that while this chest piece is technically best in slot, Robe of Winter Night is not far behind it in terms of DPS gain. Also, Robe of Winter Night does not require the warlock to roll tailoring since it is bind on equip and will save the warlock player a lot of gold! Phase 4: Bloodvine Garb, consisting of the three items Bloodvine Leggings Bloodvine Vest and Bloodvine Boots, do not technically require the warlock to have tailoring to acquire like Robe of the Void does since each of the Bloodvine items are bind on equip.
Even so, warlock players will still want to have 300 Tailoring when wearing this set. The set-bonus, 2% spell critical strike chance, will only be activated if the player wearing the items has 300 Tailoring and 2% spell critical strike chance is NOT something warlock players will want to miss out on! Engineering improves performance in three different ways.
It improves damage output, gives access to gear, and grants access to various useful trinkets! As for damage output, the primary item used would be the notorious Goblin Sapper Charge, This explosive has no cast time and has no maximum number of targets it can hit.
If the player has a well-timed sapper charge during AoE encounters, they can instantly jump up the damage meters! The downside to this explosive is that not only does it hurt the user when cast, but also requires the player to be in near-melee range of any enemies they wish to hit. If there are AoE scenarios that are too threatening for the warlock to get too close to, he/she can opt to use a Dense Dynamite,
Early into the game in Phase 1 of content warlocks with engineering can use Green Lens of Shadow Wrath for +36 shadow damage, which is one of the best pre-raid helmets. Later into the game when Zul’Gurub is released in Phase 4 comes access to another Bloodvine item, Bloodvine Goggles,
This helmet is an amazing pre-raid helmet if the player does not already have the rank 10 PvP set 2-piece bonus (helmet + shoulders). Although there are several pets available to the player through engineering warlocks are primarily concerned with getting Arcanite Dragonling and Gnomish Battle Chicken,
Arcanite Dragonling is useful once reaching Ahn’Qiraj and Naxxramas once Mages are able to use their fire talent build. Players summon arcanite dragonling against bosses because of the debuff it applies, Flame Buffet, If your arcanite dragonling is on cooldown or your guild is raiding Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, warlocks can be swapped into melee heavy groups to use Gnomish Battle Chicken,
This little chicken has a chance to cast the buff Battle Squawk for all of the melees in the group! It is also important to note that both of these pet trinkets can be used before engaging any boss and swapped over to another DPS trinket. Swapping the pet trinket away will not make the pet disappear! Warlock’s who opt to tank Emperor Vek’lor will want to get two Ultra-Flash Shadow Reflector since they are the best shadow resistance trinkets available when heading into Ahn’Qiraj,

Best Warlock Spec for Soloing Old Content – I used to main a Demonology Warlock back in Mists of Pandaria, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the spec. While I’d push PVP and PVE players to consider Affliction or Destruction in most cases, I would always suggest checking out Demo Locks for soloing old raids and farming rare drops like mounts. Put simply, Demo Locks can take a lot of damage. They’re arguably the tankiest Warlock build, with some truly brutal pets that can help out in old raids or dungeons nicely. Felguards and Demonic Tyrants are incredibly useful pets to have while playing solo.
- Demo Locks have some brilliant abilities like The Expendables and Infernal Command that make their pets even stronger, making old raids easier than ever before.
- Having the standard Warlock talents like Gateways alongside the Demonology Warlock tree makes soloing past expansion raids and dungeons a lot easier, too.
While old content is certainly accessible to all the Warlock specs, I would suggest going with Demonology Warlock as your main spec for pure tankiness, survivability, and great pet options. : The Best Warlock Spec in Dragonflight

Does any body have any home brew improvements to help even the playing field for warlocks. #2 Apr 16, 2019 Warlock’s are great for role playing and they’re also pretty powerful because their spell slots regenerate on short rests and their spell slots are automatically at the highest level spell slot that they can cast. Plus Eldritch Blast is the most powerful cantrip in the game. #3 Apr 16, 2019 There are many different ways to build a playable warlock: not underpowered in combat, tons of utilities, and naturally built-in story arcs for role playing. If you like being above average power level in combat, but don’t mind the combat being a little boring, take eldritch blast cantrip, hex spell and agonizing blast invocation. The rest of the build is completely open. If you like casting non-cantrip spells in combat, try to pick spells that can last for a whole combat. There are a few spells like that on your list for every level up to spell level 5, mostly control spells. I think when they designed the warlock spell list and each subclass, they purposely avoided low level (1-3) damage spells that both last for at least 1 minute and scales up with spell slot level. There is only one exception: celestial’s flaming sphere (an excellent pick). If you prefer out-of-combat utilities, and just need your combat to be not completely useless, warlock is probably the best class. I played a utility-focused warlock who had an archaeologist background: he is the expert of dungeon exploration. He can read all writings (Eyes of the Rune Keeper), can see magic arua, (Eldritch Sight) can see through magic darkness (Devil’s Sight), can even see through solid objects temporarily (Ghostly Gaze), and he use mage hand cantrip to avoid (or trigger) traps, use prestidigitation cantrip to clear the dirt on treasures and archaeology findings. Super fun to play. In combat, I dipped 1 level fighter to get medium armor, shield and martial weapons, and use booming blade in combat. Besides, I have 1 or 2 AoE spells. I didn’t feel completely useless. Some simple combos that can give your build some extra boosts: – Celestial, Healing Light class feature, Pact of the Chain, Gift of the Ever-Living Ones invocation (you can get this combo as early as level 3). This is arguably the second best self-healing build (still can’t beat paladin’s lay on hands). – Blade ward cantrip and armor of agathys spell. It needs a little role playing: you need to (sometimes creatively) taunt those weak goons to attack you, but you get high charisma. Last edited by WuDnD : Apr 16, 2019 #4 Apr 16, 2019 Warlocks are relatively underpowered if your DM tends to have only a couple encounters per adventuring day, allowing long rest classes to use spells from their top 2-3 levels every turn. On the other hand, if you have multiple short rests per day, the warlock gains significant ground and can overtake them in more extreme cases. #5 Apr 16, 2019 Hexblades are capable of extremely high damage output. So are other subclasses. Also, there are various magic items that increase their spell slots if that is a major concern. #6 Apr 16, 2019 The key thing to remember about warlocks is that wizard and sorcerer are not the logical comparison point. They are not controllers, they are strikers, closer to Rangers or Arcane Archers. Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast and Hex gives you consistently good damage with up to 4 attacks a turn. It helps if you think of EB as a longbow that you then augment with your spells. Unless you have a lot of short rests you won’t have as many spells per day as a wizard, but they are cast at high level and invocations and pacts give you unique options. You can even wade into melee if you go hexblade. #7 Apr 16, 2019 Tricky question. Yes and No. Technically Warlock is a full caster as they get access to 9th level spells however if you play them like a typical full caster, they can appear under powered especially if your table games tend to lack short rests on a regular basis. As much as some of us might like them to be true “Weird Wizards”, they really are more like “Weird Rangers” with Eldritch Blast in place of a longbow. Also keep in mind that the invocations add ALOT of out of combat utility which true wizards would need to depend on spells to take care of. Unlimited Disguise Self is a HUGE utility in and out of combat. Tome Warlock can get any ritual spell from any class which is lots of utility as well. At will mage armor, levitation, detect magic- all quite useful. That all being said, I fully understand your struggle. I am currently playing an Eladrin Feylock and have worked with my DM on a few homebrew rules to make it more fun to play a warlock who doesn’t just spam eldritch blast. We have homebrewed that any of the invocations that grant you once per day usage of a spell, DO NOT also cost a spell slot to use. No spell is worth having to spend both and invocation and a spell slot to have. So currently I have the Minions of Chaos invocation and can cast it once per day at it’s lowest level without using a spell slot. I have also made the following homebrewed invocations 1- Agonizing Charm-Requires Level 5- The mental fatigue of resisting the charm of the Fey hurts even those who do not fall under it’s power completely. When a creature saves against a charm effect or spell targeting wisdom or charisma, the creature takes psychic damage equal to warlock level + spell/effect level. So for instance, I am level 11 right now so if a creature resists my Fey Presence ability, it takes 12 psychic damage. The rationale for this was due to the fact that Feylock spells and abilities are predominantly charm based and lots of creatures start to be immune or have advantage against charms, this would mean those abilities have some staying power compared to some of the other patrons.2- Blood of the Fey-Requires Level 10- You have advantage on saving throws against magic. This was more a reflection of the fact that my character is both an Eladrin and Feylock so I am becoming more and more Fey as I level.3- Path of the Fey- Requires level 15- You have mastered the paths between planes as other Fey. You can cast Misty Step at will. This will be a replacement for the Invocation that grants Invisibility at will. I wasn’t super interested in that but love bamfing around battles. Also Mike Mearls in Sage Advice said that substituting any spell for another of same level does not break the balance of any class or subclass feature. Since Invisibility and misty step are both level 2 spells, this was an easy sell to my DM. Also make sure to politely nudge your DM to reward you with a Rod of the Oath Keeper at some point for your Warlock. It is essential for making the Warlock more viable. #8 Apr 17, 2019 The strength of the Warlock class isn’t necessarily rooted in their spell casting per say. Wizards and Sorcerers have many more spell slots and far more expansive spell lists than the warlock class. The warlock class offers a lot of options to play around the lower number of spell slots but when you’re playing a warlock what you should always be thinking is UTILITY. Warlocks work well as beefier utility spellcasters who excel in combat as well as in social interactions. Here’s how I’ve found to get the most out of the Warlock class and gain an edge over sorcerers and wizards.1) At level 1, an optimal combat strategy is to take the Eldritch blast cantrip and the Armor of Agathys + Hex spells. Since a warlock intrinsically has more HP than other casters and can use light armor, getting Armor of Agathys further increases this disparity. It also increases its Temp HP + cold damage with each level and warlocks always cast at max spell level so this spell will be useful at high and low levels. It also increases your damage output by allowing inflict free cold damage on enemies that hit you, no spell check or damage roll needed. It also lasts a full hour so you can easily short rest between uses to get the most use out of the spell. Hex is great because you can add a D6 to every Eldritch blast hit and you can add this to each Eldritch blast beam when you reach higher levels, giving you extra D6 damage on each beam hit. Lets say you have a CHR of 18 and are attacking a hexxed target with Eldritch blast. Every successful hit is dealing 1D10 + 4 +1D6 damage which averages out to 13 damage per hit. So at level 2, in one round of combat, you can deal an average of 13 damage with your action and deal an additional 5 cold damage if someone hits you. That’s extremely impressive for one round of combat at such a low level. Like I said though, the strength of the Warlock is in its utility. The reason I love Warlocks is because of their out of combat usefulness, because let’s face it, Hex + Eldritch blast + Agonizing blast + Armor of Agathys can sometimes feel boring. Using the Celestial as a patron gives you healing for 60 feet as a bonus action with no spell slot usage, so basically a free empowered healing word to add some more flavor to combat. You can also run maddening Hex to pop off even more damage during your bonus action, though this invocation feels much weaker at higher levels. The true strength of warlocks that sets them apart from other spellcasters, besides higher HP and light armor proficiency, is your pact boon + Eldritch invocations. Pact Boon: I always recommend getting pact of the tome. You can choose 3 non-warlock cantrips to maximize your utility. My personal favorites are guidance, spare the dying, and message which always wind up being useful. Another choice is to take friends and combine this with the Mask of Many Faces invocation to get the most out of NPC interactions without suffering the drawback of the Friends cantrip. The other OP thing about pact of the Tome is that you can get the Book of Ancient Secrets for ritual casting ability that outshines anything a wizard or sorcerer can do. Plus you save spell slots by ritual casting! The best rituals to start out with are Find Familiar (an extra turn in combat, why thank you) and Unseen servant (2 extra turns in combat? Why thank you very much). Then add as many ritual spells to the book as you can by purchasing them from shops. Eldritch invocations: Agonizing Blast, Lance of Lethargy, Repelling Blast all allow you to turn a meager cantrip into a powerful combat spell by granting Eldritch blast extra damage and crowd control effects. Maddening Hex may be worth looking at early on, but I recommend dropping this by level 6 or 7 for a more powerful invocation. Mask of Many Faces/Master of Myriad Forms and Beguiling influence combined with the Actor background or feat will easily make you the most dominating member of your party in NPC interaction. Why take things by force when you can use honeyed words to obtain what you desire. Whispers of the Grave, Visions of Distant Realms, Tomb of Levistus, Trickster’s Escape, Shroud of Shadow, Otherworldly Leap, Misty Visions, Gift of the Depths, Fiendish Vigor, Armor of Shadows, Ascendant Step, and Beast Speech all grant free, and in most cases, limitless spells that can be cast without fear of losing spell slots. Finally, if lack of Spell slots is still getting you down, try and ask your DM about locations where you may purchase/find a Wand of the Pact Keeper which grants warlocks an additional spell slot as well bonuses to your Spell Attack modifier and Spell Save DC. #9 Apr 17, 2019 The responses are on point. If you never have opportunities to rest then Warlock / Fighter / Monk / moondruid / will all miss opportunities to use their abilities as they were intended to every shortrest. Consider investing in a Carriage with a bed as transport for a warlock – rest on the move and at least between overland travel encounters you will be fresh each time. Even if you never ever have the opportunity to rest a warlock of first levels attack is 1d10 + 1d6 (hex – for an hour) at third add the charisma bonus to that damage, at 5th take two shots. It isnt underpowered when comparing that to other classes damage potential per round. If however your games are one big fight where full casters unload everything and the kitchen sink then everyone gets to go home for Martini’s and repeat the next day? Yes then nothing will compare to the damage spike of a full caster on a warpath given no incentive to hold anything in reserve. #10 Apr 18, 2019 Talk about it with your DM, so that there’s more short rests; this will help. Or if your DM is okay with it there a few ways to Homebrew this without been out of touch with how the class was designed. -1- Gain an extra Spellslots eact time your character gets a spellslot, the 4 first spells slots you get goes up to lvl4 and the 4 after that up to lvl5, with 8 spellslots you’ll get a much easier time, but without been outperforming or overpowering the other casters, maybe the other half casters though, but you Sold you Soul to a Dark entity for a reason, unlike those plebs that just picked up a random spellbook and decided to learn whats in it( and getting 11 spellslots.) -2- Change/Modify one of the class features around lvl6 or 9, like this “Soul Siphon- You’ve learned to sacrifice the Souls of worthy opponents to your Patron, pleasing him and gaining power from it- When you bring a creature that has a CR equal or superior to your level to 0HP with an attack or spell and kill it, you can decide to offer its Soul to your patron, effectively giving you back ONE spell slots, you have previously expanded, a soul offered this way cannot be used for any other purpose (like Soul cage, or other abilities that use the creature Soul), only a Wish spell can restore the creatures Soul, you can use this feature once per round. One of the simpliest and non-homebrew way to do it is to take a few levels in another spellcaster class, since your Warlock and other spellcaster slots and spells can be interchanged. Best thing would be paladin, Bards and Sorcerors, since they all use CHA as a spellcasting ability, even 2-3 lvl dip would give you 3-4 extra spell slots to cast low level spells or 1st spells that doesn’t scale up anyway. #11 Apr 18, 2019 Have your wizard cast Tenser’s Floating Disk and take a short rest while you float along behind him. It’s a ritual spell so doesn’t cost him a spell slot. Or if you are a warforged or air genasi you can rest in the Bag of Holding, #12 Apr 18, 2019 Warlock has really strong damage due to the way we scale with a single spell slot and cantrip alone, along with probably the deepest amount of personal customization. If you’re finding you’re lacking spells, I suspect you’ve not picked the right cantrips or are not using them correctly. Same with your invocations. As a Celestial you have amazing support capabilities, melee fighting under Hexblade and RP with Archfey and Old Ones plus Fiends have amazing self sustain. Dipping into Sorcerer for around 4 levels will give your more spell slots to play with (Take Catnap when you get a chance or have someone else pick it up, with Sorcerer levels you will NOT regret it.) I mean if you look at the Blood Hunter’s Profane Soul order the class feat you get later on lets you regain spellslots when you kill creatures that have a CR of 15 or higher. There is a reason you see a lot of dipping into it for only a handful of levels. I think the class on it’s own can hold itself together for tier 2, but since the campaign I’m in has reached tier 3, I’ve noticed it has fallen off for a fellow player. Keep in mind that this is even after augmenting himself with some magic items to help with his limited spell slots. This isn’t to say it is a bad class or something, basically anything is viable, but it certainly drops off when the rest of the spellcasters can be tossing around spells much more liberally with all their spell slots, and weapon users are able to use their various feats and features to also pump out some good damage. Just spamming Eldritch blast doesn’t actually scale much with the class itself since nearly all the invocations and spells you want to make it good are obtained in the first handful of levels. #17 Nov 26, 2019 Yeah, its an issue, specially if you’re in a group that rarely take short rests. Having either up to 8 slots at your max lvl ( 18-19) would’nt throw off the balance of the game by that much, ( divide it in 4 lvl4 slots and 4 lvl 5 slots) and it would tremendously help the Warlock. Or at least another mecanic that lets them recover a spell slot at least once or twice per long rest, like the new UA channel divinity Harness Divine power, that lets you regain a lv1 slot. #18 Nov 26, 2019 Frankly, I like the Warlock as is. Yes, the limitations can be frustrating when you want unlimited magical power at your finger tips, but remember you are not actually a full caster. as has been said many times before, don’t think of yourself that way. Think of yourself as a Ranger, with some nifty magical abilities. and if you just find yourself wanting to use more magic, then I recommend making sure you are proficient in arcana. Why would that matter? Well, any character proficient in arcana can scribe spell scrolls. It costs down time and gold, but in exchange you get free spell slots. Think of it like a sports team: everyone has a role. My Warlock has probably done the least amount of damage. After all, we have 2 barbarians, a monk, a bard, a paladin and a Rogue. Instead, I collect info, cast a whole bunch of identify, serve as face at least part of the time, collect every magic item and I use motion and board control spells. If this were basketball, I’d be the point guard. I’m never going to score the most points, *but* I can dish out the most assists. There’s more than one way to be valuable. No subclass in Destiny 2 can lock down a group of enemies as easily as a Shadebinder. The Warlock’s Stasis subclass is the best crowd control subclass in the game, capable of freezing anything that moves in both PvE and PvP. Shadebinders trivialize GM Nightfalls and can be a nightmare to counter in the Crucible, provided you have a good build.

Cons – Thematically, the Undead patron runs close to the Undying patron from the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. Both offer many of the same spells and ultimately create a warlock who doesn’t need to eat, drink, or sleep. While the Undead patron offers more features for player characters who want to enter melee combat, the Undying focuses on stabilizing companions and combatting the undead.

What is the most important ability for a warlock?
Assigning Ability Scores – Every class is defined by their ability scores, and in the case of a Warlock, certain ones are essential when building the ideal character. The following are listed in order of importance for starting any basic Warlock build, and the first three are the most important regardless of what party role the Warlock takes.
Charisma, 16+, Just like Bards and Sorcerers, Warlocks are Charisma-based arcane spellcasters, which makes Charisma a no-brainer to assign as the Warlock’s primary and highest stat. To be considered “best build” material, a Warlock’s starting charisma score should be at least 16 or and higher if possible. Dexterity, 14-16. Players should aim to set the Warlock’s dexterity score between 14 and 16. Dexterity is especially critical for a melee Warlock, but it should be highly valued for any build in this class. Constitution, 14-16. Determines the Warlock’s hit point numbers and therefore goes a long way towards building the character’s power. Intelligence. Nice for knowledge skills including arcana, but otherwise doesn’t particularly empower the Warlock. Wisdom. Decent for saving throws, which are very common, but little else, unless you plan to multi-class into a Cleric. Strength. The least important of all, this is your “dump stat” and even Hexblades don’t get much use from it.
Is Affliction warlock good in classic?
Affliction is considered the best leveling spec for Warlocks in Classic due to the many talents which improve your survivability through regenerating health and effectively using Life Tap to save on downtime between mobs.

How hard was warlock really I played rogue in vanilla until BFA, but I wanna switch it up now. Im thinking warlock but I am a little worried about pet management and all the spells this class has compared to mage and shadow priests (mostly talking pvp here, I know they spam SB and CoE in raids).
Warlock is in the same boat as hunters.Easy to play, hard to master.They have a lot of depth, once beginning to understand some of the gimmicks this class can pull off.
2 Likes It was not hard. Nothing in WoW has ever been hard. It is more complex in some ways, but not hard. Also, playing mage has it’s own complexity because you don’t have a tank pet and you have to kite and ” run and gun”. Warlocks “can” be easy and played lazily due to pet tanking.
- But to play them optimally you have to creatively juggle a lot more buttons (not nearly as much as shaman though).
- In short, it is not hard, but you will have to spend some time learning the nuances compared to easier classes like mage.

Some say they are squishy as hell without gear and die too fast to do anything, others say they can play SL and be successful right away, Like every other class in Vanilla. Easy to play, difficult to master. For PvE, all you have to do is follow boss mechanics, use assigned curse, spam shadowbolt, and WATCH threat.
However, PvE is generally easy overall for each individual. For PvP, there is a high skill cap. For a clothie they ain’t squishy, don’t know where you have heard that nonsense. Sure they ain’t plate wearers, but as you yourself mentioned, SL build is annoying to try chew through for any class.
- But it really comes down to what you want to focus on.
- They are on par with mages on how gear dependent they are, with the caveat that for raiding, it isn’t before BWL they can get some decent Hit.
- They will have slightly different priorities regarding stats when it comes to pvp vs pve / raid pve, as any other class.
Warlock was one of the more complicated classes in vanilla. Yes, it wasn’t too difficult to play – none of them really were that difficult – but there were a lot of spells to juggle and things to master. Hunters were probably similar complexity, both are pet classes that had to juggle a bunch of abilities and pets at the same time, not to mention stuff like soul shards and ammo.
A poor warlock was a fairly easy kill in pvp, a skilled one could be damn difficult if they were in the right situation with the right pet and talents. Daeldric: They are a great class, but if your rolling one for pvp, Horde has like a 65% advantage over alliance since they dont have to deal with wotf.
You have to deal with Fear Ward, though. Undead warlocks can’t get hard, they’re a bit busy falling apart. Niche situations though. Dwarf Priests are strong, but it’s a long cooldown and they’re not actually going to be as popular as they are on private servers where pretty much everyone knows how to min/max.
- Dwarves were never really popular as a race, and I doubt we’ll see that in Classic.
- On the other hand, Undead are popular as a race and WotF is well known.
- Was second easiest after hunters to lvl so its not hard, but like all classes in classic the difference between someone actively playing there character to someone just cruising along makes a huge difference to how good they are, this is something they have removed with retail to a large degree.

Why do they have so few spell slots, doesn’t that kinda make them useless during a fight when they essentially run out of spells and have to do combat when strength is usually a dump stat for them? I’m just curious, and looking for opinions or explanations. #2 Sep 21, 2020 Here are few things you should remember while playing a warlock, 1- your spells slots recharge on a SHORT and a LONG rest so it’s easy to get them back meaning you can cast spells more often than any caster if you take multiple short rests since most other classes need a long rest to regain their spell slots, in addition, spells you cast are always at the highest available level meaning your damage will always be high if the spells you took scale.2- Depending on your build, Eldritch blast is arguably the strongest cantrip in the game dealing 1d10 force damage which is rare to find enemies resistant to and also the damage increases on certain levels (note: you can even take Agonizing blast invocation to add your charisma modifier to it) 3- Eldritch invocations gives you spells for free without needing spellslots and some can be cast at will meaning you always have them. Some invocations give you very interesting abilities that no other class can get like devil sight which allows you to see even in magical darkness.4- Always think ahead when building a warlock and make the style that fits you and your fantasy. On the note that strength is their dump stat, people only do it if you are going caster type of build otherwise you can go pact of the blade and get a strength weapon if you want. ALL ” #3 Sep 21, 2020 It helps if you don’t think of Warlock as a traditional full caster but more of a magic ranger that also can get upper level spells.1- Instead of a longbow or crossbow, they have Eldritch Blast. It’s mostly superior to a longbow or crossbow in just about every way especially when you start customizing with invocations.2- As has also been mentioned- Warlocks are short rest casters- so they can blow through their spells to be very “bursty” in what would be normally minor skirmishes and then an hour later they are back to full.3- Their invocations give them alot of the flexibility that “normal” full casters must use their spell slots on. This flexibility from invocations evens out alot of the power differential by not having alot of spell slots. Examples- The wizard has to cast mage armor every morning with a level one slot usually- you can get it for free. The wizard needs to run away in a crowd and burns a level 1 slot for Disguise Self- you can get it for free. The wizard/druid has to use a slot to cast Daylight to dispel the darkness spell causing them to loose their quarry- you can see through magical darkness. Druid’s gotta burn a slot to talk to the animals- you can do it for free etc etc. ALOT of the feeling of whether or not Warlock is underpowered can also come from a place of table habits. If your DM & Group are not allowing for short rests, this can severely limit a Warlock and make them feel very underpowered in comparison to traditional full casters. This is something to work with your table to resolve. Enjoy! Warlock is 100% my favorite class at the moment for their lore, unique spellcasting and the massive flexibility of invocations. #4 Sep 21, 2020 Because we don’t waste time with puny low level spell slots later on like other classes. We always go full power. Also our spell slots regenerate after short rests (1 hour), not just long rests (8 hours). Also also we have the Eldritch Blast cantrip and Invocations to buff it. That’s our main damage source (unless we go melee with Pact of the Blade). Speaking of Invocations, there are several ones that let you cast spells at will without using spell slots and other, stronger ones, that let you cast spells without using spell slots but once per long rest. I’ve never encountered a forum where I got this many “talking to a wall” impressions as this one. #5 Sep 22, 2020 Insist on your Short Rests. For one time it actually hurts the party to ‘waste’ time on a Short Rest (which many other classes also use to regenerate resources + everyone enjoys getting their HP back), there are tens of times where it benefits everyone. Unless you know you are on a strict time limit, you should go for a Short Rest when you’re out of Spell Slots. This makes the Warlock way more viable, as we’re getting more high level spell slots than other classes. We might not have as many 1st and 2nd level Spell Slots, but being able to throw 5th level Spell Slots around makes many Casters envious. Since this makes our Spell casting very deliberate and calculated, lest we waste our precious Spell Slots, we have Eldritch Blast when we don’t want to waste a spell on some minions. Our Invocations make us very special, as it allows us to fully grow into the niche we chose to fulfill in our party. Instead of rgular class features, we simply choose which class features we want to have! And if we get tired of one, we can simply switch them out on a level up. We’re also tankier than the Sorcerer and Wizard, as we have a higher Hit Die and start with Light Armor Proficiency. Every class uses short rest mechanics for spending hit dice. Only rogues lack other short rest recovery abilities. Apart from Hex and Hunter’s Mark, the Warlock and Ranger comparison really doesn’t work though. Rangers are a mostly martial class with features that require the DM to throw the right type of enemies at you and have the campaign happen in the right type of environment. The spells are mostly concentration ones so you most of the time have one active and then proceed to fight with your bow or melee weapons. They also don’t have any Cantrips at all and are mostly about the exploration/survival aspect of the game. As for the Barbarian comparison, it doesn’t really help to look at max damage calculations. You will almost never see those numbers. You should look at averages instead. The Greatsword Barbarian deals on average 9+STR damage and often has advantage on that roll. The Eldritch Blast spamming Warlock deals on average 8+CHA damage (if you took the Agonizing Blast invocation) at range but also has to maintain concentration on a spell and use one of his two spell slots this fight until they reach level 5 at least, but then the calculation should include the second attack/blast as well plus it depends on how many fights the DM gives you within those 8 hours and whether you can keep up concentration. Eldritch Blast is great, no question, but just looking at the max damage paints a pretty wrong picture. Yes you can do a lot of fancy things with Invocations and yes the Eldritch Blast can keep up damage-wise, however it is not superior. Especially once we factor in feats like Great Weapon Master so he can get +10 damage on his swings, or crit fishing with a Greataxe as a half-orc etc. Not to mention that a Barbarian will be standing and swinging when the EB spamming Warlock has been put down a long while ago, which means the Barbarian is getting closer to his average damage while the Warlock is more swingy, plus the Barbarian gets more chances to roll max damage on one of his attacks. I agree though that they made a great job at making the Warlock feel distinct. They aren’t like any other class in the game. The closest to Invocations we got are the Artificer Infusions, however Artificers are only half casters without spells unique to them and no other caster in the game has a spell slot progression quite like a Warlock. This allows you to kind of earn a 3rd spell slot if you can keep concentration until you rest since you get back both your slots and still have hex running. Look at it vs a barb with a 2 hander They are going to do 1d12 or 2d6 + 2 for a max of 14 Warlock is going to do 1d10+1d6 (hex) for a max of 16 Both can get +main stat for damage. Now consider that a warlock is going to be doing force damage which isn’t gong to be resisted like physical damage and has a range of 120ft. EB can also get invocations to push and pull the targets which can push them into area effect or off terrain, save allies from taking attacks of opportunity and even pull flying creatures down out of the sky. Unlike other physical damage classes you have the fun of getting cantrips to use, and have the option of taking book of ancient secrets to gain access to ritual spells to offset the fact that you have so few spell slots. They did a good job of making it feel like its own class instead of something that should have just been a wizard subclass. Apart from Hex and Hunter’s Mark, the Warlock and Ranger comparison really doesn’t work though. Rangers are a mostly martial class with features that require the DM to throw the right type of enemies at you and have the campaign happen in the right type of environment. The spells are mostly concentration ones so you most of the time have one active and then proceed to fight with your bow or melee weapons. They also don’t have any Cantrips at all and are mostly about the exploration/survival aspect of the game. You can’t say Barb will attack stronger because they will have advantage and then turn around and say they will be standing long after the Warlock. If the Barb is getting advantage, then EVERYTHING is getting advantage on him erego he ain’t staying up longer than the Warlock. In all my campaigns playing a Warlock, we have had to revive the Barbarian far more times than me. #13 Sep 23, 2020 He’s still going to stand longer even while using reckless though. He has FAR more hit points and usually better AC as well. If the Barbarian goes down first most of the time it’s usually because the DM plays to your party’s strengths aka keeps attacking the frontline instead of trying to take out the hight priority backline first. Either way, their damage output is more reliable. Be it due to advantage on their attacks or due to them surviving longer. Both also makes it more likely to get that sweet max damage roll eventually. My point still stands. I’ve never encountered a forum where I got this many “talking to a wall” impressions as this one. #15 Sep 23, 2020 Depending on the build Warlocks can be surprisingly durable. Fiend Warlocks can generate a steady stream of Temp HP with Armor of Agathys either leading into that or backing it up. As a V. Human a good starting feat is always Moderately Armored which will likely give you an AC comparable to Barbarians. But whatever stats you look at it won’t be and apples to apples comparison. Warlocks are hard to pigeonhole since between Patron, Pact and Invocations there are a good number of variables to consider, even two Fiend/Pact of the Chain Warlocks can be so completely different as to almost be two separate classes depending on spell selection and Invocations. #16 Sep 23, 2020 So you are counting the attack, rage and reckless features in your calculation for Barbarians but only counting cantrips and one invocation for the Warlock? Mk. It’s fine if you just like Barbarian better but you need to keep your argument intellectually honest. If we assume Level 2 for both to get the features you want, then the damage calc is more like this if we are comparing full level 2 against full level 2- Barb- 1 attack with Great Axe- 6.5 avg weapon damage + 3 Strength + 2 Rage= 11.5 total Warlock- 1 attack with EB- 5.5 avg force damage + 3 charisma + 3.5 avg Hex damage= 12 total Technically Warlock wins. I would say realistically they tie. Barb has 2 Rages and Warlock has 2 Spells so they have even likelihood of applying that damage from each. Barb is more durable but Warlock can easily attack from cover and range- survivability is similar. I think it is a better comparison between Eldrich Blast+agonizing blast+Repelling Blast and Battle Master archer or Arcane Archer.

The werewolfs have the silver, the faeries have iron, rowan wood, salt, and gravesoil; the vampires have the sun, holly water,. And the warlocks? - They go through a lot of the emotions that humans have (ex pride, loyalty, etc.), but I don’t think there are any objects that they have a weakness to.

So if you make them run out of them, they can’t fight you anymore. Vampires are always strong, except for when they walk into the sunlight of course. Werewolfs can control their transformation when they’re trained. Faeries do not run out of their magic as far as I know.
So I guess that’s their weakness. And the older they get, the stronger they are. But I’m not sure. (edited by A Fandom user) 0 Besides Rowan wood, I’d assume that with preparation forcing a warlock into an environment with alot of flowing water would make it increasingly difficult for them to cast magic, depending on the sheer volume of flowing water present.

Assigning Ability Scores – Every class is defined by their ability scores, and in the case of a Warlock, certain ones are essential when building the ideal character. The following are listed in order of importance for starting any basic Warlock build, and the first three are the most important regardless of what party role the Warlock takes.
Charisma, 16+, Just like Bards and Sorcerers, Warlocks are Charisma-based arcane spellcasters, which makes Charisma a no-brainer to assign as the Warlock’s primary and highest stat. To be considered “best build” material, a Warlock’s starting charisma score should be at least 16 or and higher if possible. Dexterity, 14-16. Players should aim to set the Warlock’s dexterity score between 14 and 16. Dexterity is especially critical for a melee Warlock, but it should be highly valued for any build in this class. Constitution, 14-16. Determines the Warlock’s hit point numbers and therefore goes a long way towards building the character’s power. Intelligence. Nice for knowledge skills including arcana, but otherwise doesn’t particularly empower the Warlock. Wisdom. Decent for saving throws, which are very common, but little else, unless you plan to multi-class into a Cleric. Strength. The least important of all, this is your “dump stat” and even Hexblades don’t get much use from it.

The Warlock’s Stasis subclass is the best crowd control subclass in the game, capable of freezing anything that moves in both PvE and PvP. Shadebinders trivialize GM Nightfalls and can be a nightmare to counter in the Crucible, provided you have a good build.

What are the best warlock races in D&D 5E? – Any race that gets charisma bonuses, such as half-elves, tieflings (half-demon folks) and aasimar (angel folks). Also, humans are, as per usual, a fantastic choice – just because they’re so versatile. If you want to get super exotic, terrifying snake-people the Yuan-Ti are also super charismatic.
