How much is each type of poker chip worth?
Cash Game Chip Values – If you are using your poker chips to play a home cash game, I recommend just following the traditional rules. White is $1, red is $5, blue is $10, green is $25, This will cover you for games up to $2/$5 blinds. If you want to play higher stakes, say $5/$10 or $10/$20, you will need black and possibly purple chips.

How many chips do I need for 10 players?
Without chips, there won’t be much to your home game, since there will be nothing to play for. For maximum enjoyment in a tournament, you must take several things into consideration when deciding on chip distribution.
In this article you will learn about:
How many chips you need. How many chips each player should have at the beginning. What to take into consideration if you are planning a rebuy tournament. Chip exchange. |
Printable overviews For three common tournament variants, we have prepared a printable practical overview in PDF format, which takes into account the game length and the number of players: Overview: Chip distribution and Blindstructure For a normal game of poker at home (6-10 players), it is recommended that you have a suitcase with 500 poker chips. For less than 6 players, you can use 300 chips, but remember that at some point you may want to invite more players or try rebuy tournaments. It is therefore not a bad idea to get a larger suitcase straight away as they don’t cost much more than a small one. In a commercial suitcase you’ll normally find between 3 and 5 different chip colors. This is so that the values of the chips are easy to distinguish. Particularly for longer poker games, where the blinds become relatively high, it is useful to have more than just 3 colours, so that you can exchange chips later (see Chiprace). At the beginning of a tournament, every player should have at least 50 big blinds. With fewer chips, the blinds quickly become too high to play reasonable poker. Naturally, you can start off with more chips: you could do this with approximately 100 big blinds. An important aspect is how long you want the tournament to last – the more chips each player starts with, the longer the game. As the blinds rise, it is often helpful to trade the small value chips for those with higher value or you’ll end up with a lot of “small change” in front of you. For instance, you begin with blinds of 500/1,000. Every player therefore needs some chips worth 500.
When blinds reach 5,000/10,000, these chips will simply become annoying and should be exchanged for a 1,000 chip, or ones of even higher value. If you have a tournament with rebuys to organise, you shouldn’t distribute all the chips, but keep some out of the game to begin with. First, you should consider how often each player may rebuy chips.
If you play with unlimited chips you’ll need more than if you play a game with just one rebuy + add-ons. With pro-players at the table you should have enough chips for two rebuys and an add-on. It might be the case that some players go broke and rebuy more often, but some will do so just once or not at all.
- LIMITING TO 1 REBUY + 1 ADD-ON Here you logically need enough chips for only 1 rebuy and an add-on.
- These ones should be available since you have to assume each player will both rebuy and add-on.
- HOW BIG SHOULD THE REBUY AND ADD-ON BE? A rebuy is usually just as big as the starting stack.
- The add-on can be just as big, but it can also be bigger, for instance 1.5x the starting stack.
HOW LONG SHOULD THE REBUY PHASE LAST? You should allow rebuys for as long as it is worthwhile. This means for as long as someone who has just rebought to be able to continue in a reasonable way. If the blinds are 2,000/4,000, it wouldn’t be worthwhile for someone to rebuy a stack of 10,000 chips, since he will probably go broke very quickly with just 2 ½ big blinds.
Now you know how to distribute chips at the start of a tournament. Remember that it always depends on how long you want the tournament to last: the more time you have, the more chips each player should receive. Less than 50 big blinds is not practical, since the tournament is then reduced to mere gambling and has little to do with poker.
For three common tournament variants, we have produced a printable handout tabulating the required information. This will help you with chip distribution and blind structure and it can be found as a PDF file here: Overview: Chip distribution and Blindstructure The next article deals with the blind structure, i.e.

Think of a blue-chip stock as a stock you would bring home to meet your parents: It makes a good impression and has the substance to back it up. It’s stable, responsible and reliable. Blue-chip companies have proven themselves in good times and bad, and the stocks have a history of solid performance. Stocks that are considered blue-chip stocks generally have these things in common:
- Large market capitalization. is a measure of the size and value of a company. Blue-chip stocks are often large-cap stocks, which typically means they have a market valuation of $10 billion or more.
- Growth history. Blue-chips have a reliable, solid history of sustained growth and good future prospects. They might not be flashy like fast-growing tech stocks, but that’s because they’re already established.
- Component of a market index. Blue-chip stocks are in major market indexes like the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and/or the Nasdaq 100.
- Dividends. Not all blue-chip stocks pay dividends, but many do. are regular payments made to investors from a company’s revenue. Companies that pay dividends are often mature, which means they may no longer need to invest as much revenue back into their growth. (Interested in dividends?,)
No one type of stock should make up the bulk of your portfolio. Diversification, as always, is key when investing, even if you’re investing in companies that are widely considered rock-solid. Diversifying requires spreading your money around among many types of companies.
That means including companies with small, mid and large market capitalizations, as well as companies from various industries and geographic locations. (Learn more about the,) However, blue-chips are popular among investors, especially older or more risk-averse investors, because of their reliability.
That doesn’t mean they’re immune to market downturns, but it does mean they’ve shown a history of weathering these storms and bouncing back. Investors also appreciate the dividends blue-chip stocks typically pay. Dividends are especially attractive if you’re investing for income, as many investors do in retirement.
» Looking for stock research? Whether you’re buying blue-chip stocks or not, building a portfolio out of individual stocks takes time and research. That’s why many investors turn to low-cost index funds or exchange-traded funds instead. These funds contain a curated collection of investments and allow you to purchase a large selection of stocks in one transaction.
It’s easy and instant diversification — at least, of course, among blue-chip companies. Index funds and ETFs track an index, which is a specific segment of the stock market. Since blue-chip stocks typically have large market caps, a large-cap index fund or ETF is a good way to get exposure to these companies.
You can also buy a fund that tracks the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average since both include blue-chip stocks. » Ready to get started? Here’s more on, Neither the author nor editor held positions in the aforementioned investments at the time of publication.

What color is a $5000 chip?
Do the math. That’s a lot of cash in the Aria high-limit baccarat lounge. Photo: Rick Lax Recently I got to tour Aria’s gorgeous high-roller baccarat lounge. Holy crap, they’ve got some serious money stashed back there. If you play table games in Las Vegas, you know that red chips are worth $5, green chips are worth $25 and black chips are worth $100.
- And maybe, if you have a really good night, when you go to cash in your chips, the dealer will convert some of your black chips to purple ones, which are worth $500 each.
- Or even yellow chips, which are worth $1,000 each.
- It’s happened to me 10 or 12 times over the years.
- But what’s the next level? What happens after the $1,000 mark? Things get patriotic.
The next level up, the $5,000 chip, is known as a “flag,” because it’s white with blue and red accents. If you’ve got a flag on you, be careful not to confuse it with a white $1 chip and leave it as a tip for your cocktail waitress. Then again, if you’re the type of person who gambles with “flags,” a $5,000 loss probably won’t even blip your radar.
- Next level: “melon.” These guys are worth a whopping $25,000 each.
- Can you imagine how many actual melons a “melon” could buy you? If you shop at Whole Foods, at least a dozen.
- Finally, there’s the granddaddy of ’em all.
- The high-roller lounge doesn’t even keep these guys the main room; you have to go back to one of the ultra-ultra-high-level back rooms.
That’s where you’ll find the yellow, orange and gray chips worth $100,000 each. Take a look at that photo. I count about 60 gray chips in that stack. That’s $6,000,000 that fits in a clutch. That chip case contains more money than most people will make in a lifetime.

How much is an orange chip?
Photo Courtesy of Nevada Casino History If your only gaming experience is at the casinos of Atlantic City, you’ve probably never given the chips you used much thought. In the city by the sea, every casino has a white $1 chip. Likewise, every club uses pink $2.50 chips, red $5 chips, green $25 chips, and so on.
That’s how things are done in Jersey, but not so in other places. In Nevada, where legalized gaming got its start, you might see mostly red $5 chips and green quarters, but there is no specific law requiring a certain color be used. Thirty years ago you could find $1 chips that were white, yellow, gray, blue, brown and even black.
A few years before that, the casinos used Eisenhower dollars, and before that, the casinos used real silver dollars. Imagine that! As for larger denominations, every club can choose their own color. Harrah’s used white chips until the late 1980’s. Today, their $1 chips are white, and that’s more the norm now, partly because casinos are more corporate (with several corporations owning many casinos), and partly for safety.
White or Blue chips are one dollar.Red chips are five dollars and are called nickels.Green chips are twenty-five dollars and are called quarters.Black chips are one hundred dollars.Purple Chips are five hundred dollars and are called Barneys.Orange chips are one thousand dollars and are called pumpkins.

What’s the highest casino chip?
Familiar, Everyday Chip Colors – As you might expect, the most prevalent chip colors tend to also be the less-pricey ones. These standard Vegas chip colors are probably the tokens you’ll be dealing with at least until you graduate to playing against Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Daniel “Jungleman” Cates and their ilk. White Chip From Excalibur in LV The lowest-value chip in mainstream circulation, it’s no surprise that this one is white, the simplest color. You’ll see these used in low-stakes poker games. Light blue is a variant color that represents $1 at some casinos. Pink Chip From Hilton in AC You’ll probably encounter these chips floating around the casino, but there might not be any poker tables in the establishment that use them. Their most common application is at the blackjack tables when someone gets a natural 21 and thus earns a 3:2 reward. Red Chip From Bellagio in LV A staple of casinos and home games everywhere, the $5 chip is almost always red. A rack of red is thus $500, more than enough to buy in and reload a couple of times at a $1/$2 No Limit or $4/$8 Limit table. We have heard of mythical $50 red chips in use before, but have never once seen an example of them! Green Chip From Caesar’s Palace in LV It’s pretty rare to find any other color besides green for the $25 chip in a casino setting, but some cheap poker sets for home use have only have white, red, and blue chips. By tradition, the blue chip is the highest-value one, so it is sometimes worth $25. This is where the expression “blue-chip stock” came from. Black Chip From Foxwoods in CT If you’re fortunate enough to amass a stack of black chips, then you probably had a good evening at the tables – or you’re playing for pretty sizeable stakes. Pretty much everyone knows that a black casino token is worth $100 despite the fact that there are a few gambling houses that use white $100 chips instead.
