What algorithm does PokerStars use?

Fairness – PokerStars uses shuffle algorithms for its software, with two independent sources for the random data: user input and Quantis. The former, user input, summarizes mouse movements and takes into account event timing directly from the client software.

Quantis, comparatively, is a hardware random number generator from ID Quantique, a Switzerland-based company. According to PokerStars, this company uses quantum randomness as an entropy source. ID Quantique states on its website that it was the first to develop a quantum random number generator in 2001 and remains a market leader when it comes to hardware random number generators (RNGs).

So, in a typical shuffle, PokerStars uses typical probability and statistics, shuffling 52 cards in 52! ways or 80,658,175,170,943,878,571,660,636,856,404,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ways. To get an even and unpredictable statistical distribution, PokerStars uses 294 random bits from user input and the quantum randomness.

• Thus, if a user does not meet the required amount of entropy as gathered from both sources, the next hand is not played until that amount is met from the Quantum random number generator.
• They also use a cryptographic hash algorithm and pseudo-random number generator to mix the entropy levels for greater security and to protected against user data attacks.

The algorithm changes bit data into random numbers without bias by converting them into numbers (ex.0-31 in a range of 0-25) and then discarding numbers and recalculating if outside that range. When it comes to actual shuffling, a random card is taken from the deck and placed in a new deck.

This process is continued until all cards have moved from one deck to the other. This process and the algorithm that creates it protect against a bad distribution. All the information provided on the random number generator on PokerStars is submitted to an independent organization, Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) who audits PokerStars to confirm the randomness and security of the system, according to PokerStars Support.

• Detection of Existing Tournaments If you have existing tournaments in your database from before Auto Detection was introduced, or if you have tournaments which were not detected for some reason (maybe you stopped Auto Import before the detection was triggered) then you can begin detection manually for any tournaments you choose. To do this, go to the View Stats page, select Tournaments ( T ), and click Edit Tournament Results from the Results tab. This will open the Tournament Results window.   1. This lists all of the tournaments in your database which you can select for futher inspection.

You can select multiple tournaments by shift-clicking or control-clicking, or click the Select All link. When you have the appropriate tournaments selected click the Auto Detect button. On the Auto-Detecting Tournaments window there are three options which determine what will be updated and what existing data (that might have been already filled manually or from hand histories or tournament summaries) will be protected.

  • Update Finish and Amount Won: If this option is enabled and the detection process can be determined, the place and prize for a player will be assigned automatically. This will not overwrite any non-zero information, nor place/prize information which has already been changed.
  • Update Table Type : When this option is enabled, the detected table type will be updated and stored in the database – otherwise it will just display the detected type in the dialog. If you want to see what type PT4 thinks the tournament is before updating it you can disable this option. If ‘Protect filled Table Type’ is enabled too, then only tournaments which are currently N/A will be overwritten.
  • Protect filled Table Type : When this option is checked, the system will not overwrite any Table Type value except “N/A”. If you have already set the Table Type and only want to Auto Detect results information then tick this option.

  Tip! The default “safe” option is to have all 3 options ticked – this will mean that no data that is already set will be changed, and that any new information which is detected will be saved to your database.

• Updating Tournament Information Manually It is not possible to auto detect all information for all tournament types – for some there just isn’t enough information available in the hand history files. For these, or any which are detected incorrectly, you can update the information manually using the Tournament Results window. To open the Tournament Results window either right-click the selected tournament(s) and choose Edit Tournament or click the Edit Tournament Results button in the sidebar when viewing the Results page. Use the Filters button and/or Only Tournaments Needing Results option to narrow down the list of tournaments displayed and then select the tournament(s) that you want to change. You can select multiple tournaments by shift-clicking or control-clicking, or click the Select All link. When you have the appropriate tournaments selected make the required changes and the click Save, You can change the Buy-In and Rake/Fee amounts, the number of entrants (for MTTs this is often not included in the hand histories), the Tournament Type (Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit will nearly always be set correctly from the hand histories) and the Tournament Description.
  • Adding New Table Descriptions If the correct tournament description is not yet in the list then you can add your own choice of Tournament Description with any label or tags that you like. Click the wrench icon next to the table description to initiate this. In the Add Tournament Description window you can define exactly what you want the tournament label to consist of by selecting the following options:
    • Seats per Table : The number of seats at each table. You can specify from 2 to 8 explicitly, or “Full” for 9 or 10 seat tables. Anything other than “Full” will add a (x max) tag to the tournament definition.
    • Total Tables : The number of tables in the tournament. For single table tournaments use 1 – this will start the label with “STT”. All other tournaments are “MTT”. For scheduled multi-table tournaments with no fixed number of tables use 0 (zero). For SNGs with a fixed number of tables/entrants specify the relevant number of tables – this isn’t necessary but will allow you to identify and filter these specific tournaments. Any value other than 0 or 1 will add a x-Table tag to the tournament definition.
    • Blind Speed : Select Normal, Turbo or Super-Turbo. Anything other than “Normal” will add a tag to the tournament definition.
    • Flags : Tick the appropriate flags to add tags to the tournament definition.

    Should you want to add a tournament description which isn’t possible using the existing options you can type directly into the text field at the bottom to create any label that you want. When you have defined the new type that you want, click Add to close the window. Your new description will now be available to select in the tournament description drop-down list.

  • In the Tournament Results window you can also enter or update individual players’ results where they have not been imported or detected. For single table tournaments, PokerTracker 4 should Auto Detect all finishing positions and prizes (if the entry fee and payout structure is known) but for most tournaments with more than one table it is not possible to determine finishing positions or prizes unless this information is imported from hand histories or summaries. If you play MTTs at a site where this information is not provided in the hand history or summary files then you can enter any player results that you know in the lower section of the Tournament Results window. Select each player in turn and enter their results on the right hand side – be sure to click Save for each player you change.

Why did PokerStars shut down?

Domain name seizure – On April 15, 2011, the Department of Justice seized the,com internet addresses of the three online gambling sites, a total of five URLs : Pokerstars.com, Fulltiltpoker.com, Absolutepoker.com, Ultimatebet.com and UB.com. On July 31, 2012, the US government dismissed with prejudice all civil complaints against PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker after reaching a settlement with PokerStars which includes PokerStars acquiring Full Tilt. Under the terms of the settlement, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker admitted no wrongdoing for their past U.S.

But a game like poker, specifically six-player Texas Hold ’em, has been too tough for a machine to master — until now. Researchers say they have designed a bot called Pluribus capable of taking on poker professionals in the most popular form of poker and winning. Four-time World Poker Tour title holder Darren Elias helped test the program’s skills, playing Texas Hold ’em against a whole table of the bots.

“It’s just me and then five versions of this AI poker bot, which I would play against every day, thousands of hands,” Elias said. He’d take on four tables full of them at a time, and he’d alert the computer scientists who designed the bot when it made a mistake.

Pluribus — so-named because it takes on many opponents at once — learns by playing against itself over and over and remembering which strategies worked best. The bot quickly became a stronger player. “It was improving very rapidly, where it went from being a mediocre player to basically a world-class-level poker player in a matter of days and weeks.

Which was pretty scary,” Elias said. Ultimately, the machine came out ahead of Elias. So scientists tried a different experiment in which they put one bot up against a full table of pro players. And it won again. Their research was published today in the journal Science,

The easiest way to quantify how well Pluribus did was by how much money it was winning. “If this were for live money, the bot would be winning at a rate of about $1,000 an hour,” says Facebook AI research scientist Noam Brown, who designed Pluribus with Tuomas Sandholm, his adviser at Carnegie Mellon University.

A bot playing better than top humans in multi-player Texas Hold ’em is seen as an AI milestone — like when IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer beat chess legend Garry Kasparov. There are a couple of reasons why multi-player poker has been a challenge for AI programs. Previous groundbreaking poker bots focused on a few different kinds of two-player poker. Because only two players are involved, the bots could figure out a perfect strategy for each game – one that would eventually win every time.

1. That didn’t work in six-player poker games like no-limit Texas Hold ’em, Brown says.
2. Those games have a lot more variables.
3. But even though there’s no fail-safe strategy to win, Brown says, Pluribus still outperforms the best humans.
4. Regardless of how many players are involved, poker is simply a really tough game to program for because there’s so much information that isn’t out in the open, like it is in chess, for example.

The cards are hidden. “When you go to a game like poker there is hidden information involved, where you have access to information that your opponents don’t see, and that greatly complicates things,” Brown says. As Pluribus taught itself to play, some of the tactics it came up with were surprising. The bot learned to pick its moments and then make huge bets and bluffs — bigger than most humans would make. That’s what Elias found when he played against it. “The bot was not afraid to make these kind of plays often,” he says. “Which is something that humans could probably do a little more.” Elias says he’s starting to incorporate bigger bets into his own game.

The bot was excellent at varying its strategy even when dealt the exact same hand, Elias says, “which is pretty tough to play against because you can’t really pick up a pattern.” Pluribus also confirmed something that many poker pros already suspected — “limping” is almost never a good strategy. Limping means making the smallest bet possible to stay in the hand, instead of raising or folding.

Pluribus eventually stopped limping as it became a stronger player. Ultimately, Elias says Pluribus could spell the end of high-stakes online poker. “I don’t think many people will play online poker for a lot of money when they know that this type of software might be out there and people could use it to play against them for money.” Poker sites are actively working to detect and root out possible bots.

A superhuman poker bot is also humbling and a little sad, Elias says. “There’s no going back. The bots will always be better than us.” Brown, Pluribus’ developer, says it’s exciting that a bot could teach humans new strategies and ultimately improve the game. “I think those strategies are going to start penetrating the poker community and really change the way professional poker is played,” he said.

And the bot’s success has implications beyond poker. Brown says their AI technology could eventually be useful in other situations where there are multiple people involved and a lot of unknown variables, like getting a self-driving car through traffic.
