What footprint is the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro?

Optics-ready handguns are all the rage and manufacturers are rushing to meet the demand. There are several reasons reflex sights on handguns have become so popular. Most importantly, they allow for target focus shooting; with a reflex sight you do not have to shift your focus from the target/threat to the front sight.

And, though there is a learning curve, they also offer faster target engagement. No wonder red-dot sights have been the standard in open-class handgun competitions for so long. Of course, you do not have to buy a new optics-ready handgun to have a reflex sight equipped pistol. There are plates that can be purchased to replace the rear sight, or you can have a competent gunsmith mill your pistol’s slide to accept direct mounting.

The latter is the most desirable because it allows for a redundant sight set up where you can still see your factory or taller aftermarket standard sights. This is a good idea because there’s always the potential for an electronic device to fail. I’ve been a bit slow to warm to the reflex pistol sight concept, mostly because I’ve been waiting for the sights to become more reliable.

  1. Talking with Dave Fink at Fink’s Custom Gunsmithing, which also provides the smithy services for Gunsite Training Academy, I’m now much more open to their use.
  2. Dave said it was not uncommon for reflex sighted handguns to make it through the 1,000-round, weeklong Gunsite 250 Pistol Class, which is known to break all but the best equipment.

Fink also said reflex sight installation has become a very common modification for his shop. He was kind enough to share his wisdom and here are some things to consider if you’re looking to make the jump. Four Major Footprints Dave said there are four very popular reflex sight footprints with some cross compatibility.

  1. We’ll identify them with letters here for ease of understanding.
  2. Footprint A will fit the Trijicon RMR Type 2, Holosun 507CX2, and Trijicon SRO reflex sights.
  3. Footprint or slide cut B fits the Shield RMSc, the SIG Sauer Romeo 0, and the Holosun 507KX2.
  4. Footprint C works for the Leupold Delta Pro, SIG Sauer Romeo 1, and the Crimson Trace CTS-1250.

Slide cut D will fit the Burris Fast Fire and the 2 Vortex Venom. And finally, like with the new Trijicon RMRcc and Vortex Viper, some reflex sights have their own unique footprint. Having your pistol slide milled to accept the right reflex sight is important. Once you’ve made your choice, you’re kind of stuck with it. If you have a slide cut for a Trijicon RMR and later decide you want to use the RMRcc, your only option might be a new slide.

If you’re not completely sure which sight you might ultimately want, footprint option B offers three very good options. In fact, Fink believes the Holosun 507KX2 is one of the best reflex sights currently available. He is also a believer in all of the Trijicon reflex sights, but you can get the Holosun, and have your slide milled and the sight installed, for less than the cost of any of the Trijicon models.

Fink’s charges $175 for the slide milling and installation service. Back-Up Iron Sights So what about back-up iron sights? Depending on your gun and the reflex sight you chose, you might be able to work with your factory sights. Holosun K-model reflex sights also have a rear sight machined into the back of the base of the reflex sight.

In other cases, you may have to opt for a higher front and rear sight that will co-witness and provide you a means for aiming in case the battery in the reflex sight gives out or the sight becomes broken. (Reflex sights can break; during a recent test of a new reflex sight, several of the sights lost their lenses.

This is of course a good reason to choose a proven design.) Regardless of the direction you choose, standard sights are part of the conversation you should have with your gunsmith when discussing slide cuts and installation. Choosing a gunsmith that performs this service a lot is the best bet because they have experience in the conversion and with compatibility. And finally, beyond the external dimensions of the sight, which are equal to the area of the slide that needs milled, there’s the consideration of screws. While some sights have the same footprint, they do not use the same screws or are they in the same place.

Fink and his talented team of gunsmiths understand this and can tell you what type of screws you will need, and how your slide needs to be drilled and tapped, so that you could say, run either a Shield RMSc or a Holosun 507KX2 on your handgun. Adapter plates can work for reflex sight mounting but if you’re serious about making the move to the dot, you’ll either need a handgun that’s optics ready from the factory or a custom cut slide to work with the reflex sight of your choice.

And you’ll want that work done by a competent custom shop like Fink’s, who by virtue of the smithy services they provide to Gunsite, have seen it all. Not only can they do all the work you need, if you ask them, they’ll even tell you which reflex sights they see the least problems with, and which ones fail most often.

Are red dots on pistols more accurate?

Where is Leupold DeltaPoint pro made?

Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Reflex Red Dot Sight Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Reflex Red Dot Sight By Chuck Hawks Leupold Deltapoint Pro Cross Slot Mount BX-4 McKinley HD 10x42mm Binocular. Illustration courtesy of Leupold & Stevens, Inc. Guns and Shooting Online recently requested a for a full review. MOS stands for Modular Optical System and it means that this particular Glock pistol comes with dedicated plates for mounting most popular reflex sights.

The G40 is marketed primarily as a hunting and field pistol, so a red dot sight makes a lot of sense. It is certainly easier and more accurate to put a red dot, which is in the same optical plane as the target, where you want your bullet to go than it is to align a front sight blade in a rear sight notch with the target, all three of which are in different optical planes (distances from the eye).

Mounting an optical sight on top of the slide of an autoloading pistol is not always the best idea. The sight has to survive not only the recoil of the pistol, but also the acceleration and deceleration of the slide as it operates. This is a very demanding requirement, particularly in the case of a 10mm pistol.

The 10mm Auto is the most powerful of the reasonably popular and common auto pistol cartridges, roughly equivalent to the,357 Magnum revolver cartridge. I have, in the past, had the recoil of,357 Mag. hunting revolvers shake apart red dot sights, and there is no moving slide on a revolver. Hence, I knew a sight for the G40 had to be extremely rugged and reliable.

In a circumstance such as this, Leupold comes to mind first. Leupold scopes and red dot sights are world renowned for their performance and durability. If you need an optical sight that will absolutely, positively get the job done, you can’t do better than a Leupold.

  1. Leupold & Stevens is a fifth generation, family owned company that has been in continuous operation since 1907 in the Portland, Oregon USA area.
  2. The Leupold plant has been at its present location in Beaverton, Oregon (a Portland suburb) for over 45 years.
  3. Leupold recently introduced a new (for 2016) red dot sight, the DeltaPoint Pro reflex sight.

Reflex sights are those open, “heads-up” type sights without a tube housing. They are minimalist optical sights, about as small and light as an optical sight can be and thus, I figured, perfect for the recoiling slide of the G40. I requested a new DP-Pro #119688 sight with a 2.5 MOA red dot from our friends at Leupold.

  • Like Leupold riflescopes, the DeltaPoint Pro reflex sight is designed, machined and assembled in the USA.
  • The DP-Pro arrived very securely packaged in a small Leupold box completely filled with a block of closed cell foam with cut-outs for the sight itself, battery, sight cover and mounting screws plus Torx wrench.

The enclosed instruction sheet clearly explains the sights operation, installation, bore sighting, product warrantee and available accessories. Here is a list of its advertised features and specifications. Features

Mounting the DP-Pro to the Glock 40 MOS is very easy. A set of four optical sight mounting plates is included with the G40 MOS, which cover the most popular brands of reflex sights. You just remove the cover plate from the top of the pistol’s slide and replace it with the appropriate optical sight mounting plate, in this case #08 for Leupold.

  1. The DP-Pro then mounts directly to the Glock mounting plate.
  2. It is not necessary to remove the Glock’s factory rear sight.
  3. If your chosen handgun is not a Glock MOS model, Leupold offers accessory mounting bases for S&W revolvers and a variety of popular brand/model autoloading pistols.
  4. They also offer a reversible cross-slot mount for Weaver/Picatinny bases.

See www.leupold.com for mounting details and options. Installing or replacing the battery does not require removing the sight from its mount, so your sight’s zero is not affected. You turn the DP-Pro on by briefly depressing the power button. This is located on the top of the sight, directly behind the sight’s projection/viewing glass and over the battery compartment.

To turn the sight off, you depress and hold the power button for at least three seconds. (I give it a slow five count.) When turned back on, the red dot returns to the previously set brightness level. The power button is also used to change the intensity of the projected red aiming dot. Once the sight is on, each brief press of the button cycles the intensity of the red dot through its eight brightness settings.

These accommodate sighting in total darkness, standing in full bright sunlight and all ambient light levels in between. The DP-Pro has a unique low battery indicator. This feature flashes the red dot 10 times when the battery power is low. The operator will still have several hours of operating time in this mode before the battery dies completely.

  1. Another feature worth a brief explanation is the Motion Sensor Technology.
  2. This conserves battery life by switching the unit to stand-by mode when the power is left on, but the gun has not been moved for at least five minutes.
  3. Any movement will turn the sight back on.
  4. Of course, when you are finished shooting, you should turn the DP-Pro off to maximize battery life.

You do need to keep your eye aligned with the optical axis of the sighting glass to see the red dot. Since there is no optical tube with which to align your eye, this is not as automatic as you might suppose. I found the fastest way to find the red dot was to estimate aligning the pistol’s iron sights and then look through the sighting glass to see the red dot.

With the DP-Pro mounted, it was time to head to the range to find out how it works from a bench rest at 25 yards. For test ammunition, I used full power SIG Sauer Elite 180 grain FMJ factory loads, MV 1250 fps. This pistol had averaged 2.25 inch bench rest groups at 25 yards with this load using the factory iron sights.

Shooting Results

SIG 180 gr. FMJ: Smallest group 1-1/8 in.; largest group 1-5/8 in.; average group size = 1.33 inches

These results speak for themselves and illustrate the improvement in aiming precision a good red dot sight provides. In addition, I am sure the groups from the G40 would have been even smaller were it not for its heavy, creepy trigger with excessive over-travel.

  • Even with a 3.5 pound connector, the G40 has the worst trigger pull I have yet encountered in a Glock pistol.
  • Sighting-in the G40 with the DP-Pro was easy, due to the little Leupold’s accurate, 1 MOA, windage and elevation adjustments.
  • During this same trip to the range I was sighting-in a pistol with aftermarket adjustable iron sights and the contrast in ease of use was striking.

The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro withstood the recoil and slide velocity of full power 10mm Auto loads without missing a beat. Everything worked as advertised, including the Motion Sensor Technology. : Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Reflex Red Dot Sight

What scope do Navy SEAL snipers use?

The U.S. Marine Corps is replacing its existing sniper rifles with a newer model that fires a heavier, longer-range bullet. The new Mark 13 Mod 7 sniper rifle, a favorite of Navy SEALs is replacing the older M40 series of rifles. The result is a more accurate rifle with the potential to hit targets at nearly three quarters of a mile.

  1. The M40 series of sniper rifles has served the Marine Corps for more than 50 years.
  2. Originally introduced during the Vietnam War, the Marine Corps purchased commercial Remington Model 40X bolt-action varmint rifles with heavy barrels, slapped on a Redfield 3-9x variable power scope, and gave them the designation M40.

The M40 served in the Vietnam War and every conflict since then, progressively upgraded with new features such as a new Remington 700 action, fiberglass stocks, new optics, and other shooting accessories. Despite the upgrades, the M40 series was limited by the ballistics of the,308 Winchester round,

Although an effective hunting and military round, a,308 round rapidly loses energy after 700 yards. At 600 yards, a sniper armed with a M40 can expect a bullet to drop 105 inches short of the target, requiring upward compensation of 105 inches to remain on target. At 800 yards the drop balloons to 228 inches, and at 1,000 yards the drop is 421 inches.

This loss of energy also affects wind drift, with,308 requiring 53 inches of wind correction in a five mile-per-hour wind to hit a target at 1,000 yards. The M40 series’ maximum effective range is about 1,000 yards. Leupold Deltapoint Pro Cross Slot Mount Marine with M40A5 sniper rifle. Marine Corps photo. The fewer corrections a sniper must make to hit a long distance target the better, and sharpshooters accomplish this by using a heavier, higher-power round. Unlike the older,308 round, the bigger,300 Winchester Magnum is effective out to 1,300 yards.

  1. It requires only 246 inches of vertical correction at 1,000 yards, and 40 inches of horizontal correction at 1,000 yards in a five mile-per-hour wind.
  2. The heavier round also hits with more energy at longer ranges, making it more likely to incapacitate the target.
  3. The,300 round’s maximum range is about 1,300 yards.

Now, according to Military Times, the Marines are finally switching to a,300 Winchester Magnum platform. The Mark 13 Mod 7 rifle, originally used by Navy SEALs, is a Remington 700 long action in a lightweight, skeletonized chassis. The Mark 13 uses the Nightforce ATACR rifle scope with Horus Tremor3 reticle, Leupold Deltapoint Pro Cross Slot Mount Writer on Defense and Security issues, lives in San Francisco.

Will DeltaPoint micro fit on a Glock 42?

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. – Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 3, 2022 This sight excels in two areas: 1) For old guys who have trouble seeing their iron sights. You’ve heard the adage “can’t teach an old dog new tricks), well if you’ve spent 50 years looking over a slide with iron sights then this is the red dot for you.

No head adjustment, no swimming around looking for a stupid dot! Bring up the gun and the dot is right there co-witnessing your front sight, and if the battery fails, the provided iron dots on the sight itself do a great job of putting bullets where they belong. I painted my iron dots a bright color making them much more accessible (remember the old guy thing).2) For distance shooting.

I have this on my Predator/Varmint project and it has allowed me to extend my functional accurate distance considerably. Just as it was with iron sights, it still looks like I’m writing my name across the target, but at least now I’m writing with a smaller font.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 11, 2022 Man I paid full price it’s a great deal now and disadvantage I see with it is is dose slow you down if your mechanics are a bit off and if you’re wanting to dip a toe in the pistol dots this sight kinda forces you to bring it up and point correctly because if you don’t you’re hunting for the dot I really like that if something happens to the dot the sight doubles as a ghost ring Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 16, 2022 I installed this on my glock 31.

At first I was apprehensive to spend $400 on something that looked like an over glorified iron sight. I was also concerned I would not be able to find the Red Dot because of the window so small but actually I find this that a lot easier to see then trying to fish for the dot on a much bigger Red Dot sight like a Delta point Pro I was especially impressed with how it held zero and it mounts very solidly to my dovetail on my glock 31 and it was very easy to get hits at 75 ft and very good groups I can put all 15 shots on the size of a small dinner plate.

This is by far one of the best Red Dot sights I’ve used and it’s so intuitive very well built and sturdy Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 12, 2022 Easy to install if you can remove the OEM rear sights. Battery is easy to replace. It’s a very small tube, basically you don’t gain the additional FOV of a traditional red dot sight, but when you properly line up your irons, you’ll have a red dot that you can use with both eyes open and focus on the target rather than your front sight.

The back of the sight includes two rear “iron sights” as you’re replacing for factory iron sights. It’s an upgrade over iron sights, but not as much as a full red dot. But you don’t have to permanently modify your slide to use this and it’s low profile, so that’s nice.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 30, 2022 Paired this with the Glock 43x and it makes the perfect CCW. This red dot has improved my accuracy drastically and you can easily hit 25-50 yards. Shipping was quick and you get what you’re ordering. Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 31, 2021 This sight has some great advantages and a few disadvantages.

These are only my opinions so go easy, you may get different results. Pros; -Very easy to install. You don’t have to buy a special slide or have yours milled so keep that in mind when considering the price. -Great for hitting targets at longer distances.

It’s easy to hold the dot on distant targets. -Dot is easily visible no matter how bright the sun is. Cons; -It’s slower than iron sights or lasers. With practice I’ve got my time to acquire the dot on target down to about one full second. By comparison my Crimson Trace laser equipped Glock acquires the target almost instantly.

For defense that one second is a lot. I may get better with more practice. The disadvantage of the laser is that it disappears if the target is in direct sunlight at more than five yards. Even in shade it won’t really work passed fifteen yards, but the Delta Point micro is visible at any distance since it doesn’t actually project a light.

    1. I guess it really depends on what you’re using it for.
    2. For target shooting or if you need to make long shots I would definitely go with the Delta Point Micro but for defense where speed matters, unless I get a lot faster with target acquisition using this sight I would opt for open sights or a laser.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 7, 2022 This is great for it you do not want to have your pistol slide cut to fit an optic. It is small, which means you will have to train for sit picture but it is not that small. Works great on a smaller frame pistol that you would like to keep CC.

    1. Make sure you pistol is compatible with this, then follow the instructions they provide.
    2. Definitely worth the purchase.
    3. Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 1, 2022 you would think the tiny red dot window would make this dot hard to locate.
    4. In practice it index’s in the same sight plane with the front sight replacing the rear sight making it the most instinctive to locate.

also i usually buy the larger 5-8 m.o.a. dots but this is so bright the 3 works just fine even with my astigmatism. Ive carried this on my hip for about 8 weeks so far with no problems. ps S&W M&P,40
