An ace can be the lowest card of a straight (ace, 2, 3, 4, 5) or the highest card of a straight (ten, jack, queen, king, ace), but a straight can’t “wrap around”; a hand with queen, king, ace, 2, 3 would be worthless (unless it’s a flush). Notice that most of the hand categories are either entirely about the ranks of the cards (pairs, straight, full house, etc.) or entirely about the suits (flush). It’s a good idea to begin your program by separating the rank information and the suit information. To check for a straight flush or royal flush, you’ll have to consider both kinds of information. In what form do you want the suit information? Really, all you need is a true or false value indicating whether or not the hand is a flush, because there aren’t any poker categories like “three of one suit and two of another.” What about ranks? There are two kinds of hand categories involving ranks: the ones about equal ranks (pairs, full house) and the ones about sequential ranks (straight). You might therefore want the rank information in two forms. A sentence containing all of the ranks in the hand, in sorted order, will make it easier to find a straight. (You still have to be careful about aces.) For the equal-rank categories, what you want is some data structure that will let you ask questions like “are there three cards of the same rank in this hand?” We ended up using a representation like this: > (compute-ranks ‘(q 3 4 3 4)) (ONE Q TWO 3 TWO 4) One slightly tricky aspect of this solution is that we spelled out the numbers of cards, one to four, instead of using the more obvious (1 Q 2 3 2 4), The reason, as you can probably tell just by looking at the latter version, is that it would lead to confusion between the names of the ranks, most of which are digits, and the numbers of occurrences, which are also digits. More specifically, by spelling out the numbers of occurrences, we can use member? to ask easily if there is a three-of-a-kind rank in the hand. You may find it easier to begin by writing a version that returns only the name of a category, such as three of a kind, and only after you get that to work, revise it to give more specific results such as three sixes,

In the Schafkopf group some or all of the queens (overs) and/or jacks (unders) become permanent trumps. People are sometimes confused on when they should double down on an 11. So, back to the question at hand. Should you double down your 11 versus the dealer’s Ace? The simple answer is “Always!” Even against an Ace? Yes. After thousands of hands against every card in the deck, I found that you will be from 1.23% – 2.02% better off by doubling down on your 11 on every hand.
But what about the Ace? Let’s get to the facts. When the Dealer is showing an Ace as his up card, he will have a pat hand 61.78% of the time. And 30.74% of the time that will be a Blackjack, but you will have a Blackjack 6.40% of the time when an “Ace” is showing — so that cuts it down to 55.38% for a pat hand.
- But now, back to the up card of Ace.
- If you double-down against the Ace instead of just playing out the hand in the normal fashion, you will gain a staggering amount of 6.56% over just the normal play.

The object of the game is to draw cards that add up to 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over (bust). Blackjack is an Ace and any Ten-value card on the first two cards dealt. Blackjack pays 3-2. The Jack, Queen, and King count as 10. The Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever you wish. All other cards count as face value. The dealer gives each player two cards. The Dealer’s first card is face up, his second card is face down. If you are satisfied with the total of your two cards, you can “stand” (draw no more cards). If not, you can take a “hit” (draw one or more cards, one at a time). If your total is nearer 21 than the Dealer’s, you win even money. If you go over 21 (bust) you lose even if the Dealer goes Bust. A tie is a Standoff and nobody loses. After each player is satisfied with the cards he has asked for, the Dealer turns up his hidden card. If he has 16 or less he must draw additional cards until he reaches 17 or over. If he has 17 or more he does not take any more cards. Dealer hits on soft 17. If he busts he must pay all the players still in the game. Always split pairs of Aces and pairs of Eights. Put equal amount of bet next to original wager. Your cards are split and you are now playing two separate hands. When pairs of Aces are split the player only receives one card for each Ace. NEVER SPLIT PAIRS OF 10-VALUE CARDS. The object for Splitting Pairs is to improve or salvage a hand (two 8’s equals 16, a player splits in hopes of drawing to two hands of 18 each). You may double down on any first two cards and after splitting on shoe games only, preferably totaling 10 or 11. Player doubles his bet and is dealt only ONE more card. The object of doubling down is to double your winnings. If you decide to take insurance you are insuring your hand in the event the dealer has Blackjack. Insurance pays 2-1, therefore, if you have a $2 bet you should take a $1 insurance wager (1/2 of original bet). If the dealer has Blackjack you lose your original bet, but you are paid $2 on your insurance.
Lucky Ladies is an optional bet used in the game of Blackjack. Lucky Ladies is only available on 2 and 6 deck Blackjack games. The proposition bet is placed and is paid if the player’s first two cards equal a total of twenty (20).
Lucky Ladies Bonus Bets are paid as follows:
