Is ace a 1 in a straight?

The idea of this project is to invent a procedure poker-value that works like this: > ( poker-value ‘(h4 s4 c6 s6 c4)) (FULL HOUSE – FOURS OVER SIXES) > (poker-value ‘(h7 s3 c5 c4 d6)) (SEVEN-HIGH STRAIGHT) > (poker-value ‘(dq d10 dj da dk)) (ROYAL FLUSH – DIAMONDS) > (poker-value ‘(da d6 d3 c9 h6)) (PAIR OF SIXES) As you can see, we are representing cards and hands just as in the Bridge project, except that poker hands have only five cards. Here are the various kinds of poker hands, in decreasing order of value:

Royal flush: ten, jack, queen, king, and ace, all of the same suit

table>

• Straight flush: five cards of sequential rank, all of the same suit

table>

• Four of a kind: four cards of the same rank

table>

• Full house: three cards of the same rank, and two of a second rank

table>

• Flush: five cards of the same suit, not sequential rank

table>

• Straight: five cards of sequential rank, not all of the same suit

table>

• Three of a kind: three cards of the same rank, no other matches

table>

• Two pair: two pairs of cards, of two different ranks

table>

• Pair: two cards of the same rank, no other matches

table>

• Nothing: none of the above

An ace can be the lowest card of a straight (ace, 2, 3, 4, 5) or the highest card of a straight (ten, jack, queen, king, ace), but a straight can’t “wrap around”; a hand with queen, king, ace, 2, 3 would be worthless (unless it’s a flush). Notice that most of the hand categories are either entirely about the ranks of the cards (pairs, straight, full house, etc.) or entirely about the suits (flush). It’s a good idea to begin your program by separating the rank information and the suit information. To check for a straight flush or royal flush, you’ll have to consider both kinds of information. In what form do you want the suit information? Really, all you need is a true or false value indicating whether or not the hand is a flush, because there aren’t any poker categories like “three of one suit and two of another.” What about ranks? There are two kinds of hand categories involving ranks: the ones about equal ranks (pairs, full house) and the ones about sequential ranks (straight). You might therefore want the rank information in two forms. A sentence containing all of the ranks in the hand, in sorted order, will make it easier to find a straight. (You still have to be careful about aces.) For the equal-rank categories, what you want is some data structure that will let you ask questions like “are there three cards of the same rank in this hand?” We ended up using a representation like this: > (compute-ranks ‘(q 3 4 3 4)) (ONE Q TWO 3 TWO 4) One slightly tricky aspect of this solution is that we spelled out the numbers of cards, one to four, instead of using the more obvious (1 Q 2 3 2 4), The reason, as you can probably tell just by looking at the latter version, is that it would lead to confusion between the names of the ranks, most of which are digits, and the numbers of occurrences, which are also digits. More specifically, by spelling out the numbers of occurrences, we can use member? to ask easily if there is a three-of-a-kind rank in the hand. You may find it easier to begin by writing a version that returns only the name of a category, such as three of a kind, and only after you get that to work, revise it to give more specific results such as three sixes,

Why is it called an ace and not a 1?

Simple Origins. The word ‘ace’ comes from the Latin or Old French word ‘as’, meaning ‘a single unit’. It was used commonly in the Roman Empire, as the name for a small coin that weighed about 11 grams, and later in many popular games throughout Europe, where it represented the lowest score or value possible.

Is ace a 10?

This is a very large group of point-trick games, mostly of European origin, in which the ace and ten are particularly valuable cards. A typical scheme is ace=11, ten=10, king=4, queen=3, jack=2. Sometimes face cards count king=3, queen=2, jack=1. Sometimes the scheme is simplified by counting 10 for aces and tens and nothing for other cards.

Dobbm (Tappen) – from the Stubai valley in Austria Six-Bid Solo and its variations Frog and Crazy Solo from the USA. Bura Russian game in which two or three cards of the same suit can be led simultaneously, and its variant Kozel,

The cards used in mediterranean countries typically do not include a ten. In these places, ace-ten have been adapted by using another card to take the place of the ten. Usually the three is used; sometimes the seven.

Briscola (popular Italian game) Briscola Chiamata (five-player Briscola variant played two against three, the high bidder choosing a partner by calling a trump card) Schembil (six-player Briscola variant played in Sicily and North Africa) Brisca (Spanish version of Briscola) Bisca (Portuguese and Brazilian versions of Briscola) Albastini (Tanzanian game, probably a descendant of Portuguese Bisca) Alcalde (three-player Brisca variant from Puerto Rico) Madrasso (Venetian game for four players) Sueca (four-player Portuguese game) and its variant with bidding: Sueca Italiana,

Within the ace-ten games, several groups can be identified that have additional distinguishing characteristics.

In the Schafkopf group some or all of the queens (overs) and/or jacks (unders) become permanent trumps. In the Marriage group there is an extra score for holding the king and queen (over) of a suit, and quite often for other card combinations as well. In the Jass group the jack/under (or occasionally the queen/over) and nine of the trump suit are the highest cards, above the ace. Usually the jack/under is worth 20 points and the nine is worth 14. The jass group can be thought of as a subgroup of the marriage group; there are scores for the king-queen (king-over) combination and for sequences of three or more cards in suit and for four of a kind. The Sedma group is an unusual collection of Central European games in which a card is “beaten” by an equal card. They have some claim to be included within the ace-ten group of trick-taking games because the cards are played in the equivalent of tricks (although a ‘trick’ can sometimes continue for two or more rounds) and the aces and tens are worth ten points each.

Do you double 11 vs ace?

Should You Double Down Your 11 Versus the Dealer’s Ace? – Published on Wednesday, 24 April 2013 17:29 Written by Sam 0 Comments Many visitors to my website find me by searching for the traditional basic strategy for blackjack. Everyone’s familiar with basic strategy, as it effectively decreases the house edge to about 0.6% in Las Vegas.

  1. But many casinos outside of Vegas have blackjack rules that make the house edge even higher — even when you’re playing perfect basic strategy.
  2. That makes something very clear to me.
  3. People who play only basic strategy are doomed to fail.
  4. There are other visitors to my website who are using the Internet to find the answer to the question, “How can I win at the Casino?” or they are searching with terms that indicate that they want to be a professional gambler.

I can tell you right now that if you plan on being a professional gambler, you better have a lot of money. On the other hand, if you want to put a little bit of money in your pocket, enjoy some casino perks, and have a great time on your visit to the casino, you need to buy my book and read it first.

People are sometimes confused on when they should double down on an 11. So, back to the question at hand. Should you double down your 11 versus the dealer’s Ace? The simple answer is “Always!” Even against an Ace? Yes. After thousands of hands against every card in the deck, I found that you will be from 1.23% – 2.02% better off by doubling down on your 11 on every hand.

But what about the Ace? Let’s get to the facts. When the Dealer is showing an Ace as his up card, he will have a pat hand 61.78% of the time. And 30.74% of the time that will be a Blackjack, but you will have a Blackjack 6.40% of the time when an “Ace” is showing — so that cuts it down to 55.38% for a pat hand.

  • But now, back to the up card of Ace.
  • If you double-down against the Ace instead of just playing out the hand in the normal fashion, you will gain a staggering amount of 6.56% over just the normal play.
  • This is one of the many “tricks” I have learned by tediously documenting my own real world play for the past 30 years and analyzing the results.

Just one one of the many insights I cover in my book. You can achieve success at blackjack with the methods found in Ask Dr. BlackJack, You can read this book and master my modified strategy in a single day. I’ll personally autograph your copy of the book.

Also included is my laminated blackjack chart of my own modified basic strategy that you can take to the casino with you and use at the table. Get the book, the card, and the autograph and be a better blackjack player. This entry was posted on Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 at 5:29 pm and is filed under Blackjack Strategy,

Can a dealer use an ace as 1?

Blackjack Rules

The object of the game is to draw cards that add up to 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over (bust). Blackjack is an Ace and any Ten-value card on the first two cards dealt. Blackjack pays 3-2. The Jack, Queen, and King count as 10. The Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever you wish. All other cards count as face value. The dealer gives each player two cards. The Dealer’s first card is face up, his second card is face down. If you are satisfied with the total of your two cards, you can “stand” (draw no more cards). If not, you can take a “hit” (draw one or more cards, one at a time). If your total is nearer 21 than the Dealer’s, you win even money. If you go over 21 (bust) you lose even if the Dealer goes Bust. A tie is a Standoff and nobody loses. After each player is satisfied with the cards he has asked for, the Dealer turns up his hidden card. If he has 16 or less he must draw additional cards until he reaches 17 or over. If he has 17 or more he does not take any more cards. Dealer hits on soft 17. If he busts he must pay all the players still in the game. Always split pairs of Aces and pairs of Eights. Put equal amount of bet next to original wager. Your cards are split and you are now playing two separate hands. When pairs of Aces are split the player only receives one card for each Ace. NEVER SPLIT PAIRS OF 10-VALUE CARDS. The object for Splitting Pairs is to improve or salvage a hand (two 8’s equals 16, a player splits in hopes of drawing to two hands of 18 each). You may double down on any first two cards and after splitting on shoe games only, preferably totaling 10 or 11. Player doubles his bet and is dealt only ONE more card. The object of doubling down is to double your winnings. If you decide to take insurance you are insuring your hand in the event the dealer has Blackjack. Insurance pays 2-1, therefore, if you have a $2 bet you should take a $1 insurance wager (1/2 of original bet). If the dealer has Blackjack you lose your original bet, but you are paid $2 on your insurance.

Why is 1 called ace in cards?

Etymology – The word “ace” comes from the Old French word as (from Latin ‘as’) meaning ‘a unit’, from the name of a small Roman coin, It originally meant the side of a die with only one pip, before it was a term for a playing card. Since this was the lowest roll of the die, it traditionally meant ‘bad luck’ in Middle English, but as the ace is often the highest playing card, its meaning has since changed to mean ‘high-quality, excellence’.
