Portion control – healthy portion sizes explained Ja_inter Getty Images Confused by portion sizes? Dietitian provides this handy guide. Over the past 20 years, portion sizes have gone up and up – in some cases they’ve almost doubled. It’s a ploy by food marketers – the more we eat, the more food we buy and the more money they make.
- And the trouble is, these ever-increasing portion sizes make it hard for us to gauge how much food we actually need.
- From the University of Liverpool shows that when bigger portions are served, we eat them because we’re programmed to clear our plates.
- If you care about your health, you need to re-set this portion distortion.
Here’s how to stick to healthy portion sizes: Opt for wholegrain bread, which is more nutritious, lower GI (so has less of a negative effect on blood sugar), which means it will fill you up more too. Butter has had a bad press, but in moderation it’s a healthy source of fat.30g is around 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup, which is probably a lot smaller than you’re used to.
It’s easy to overeat cereal, so it’s definitely worth measuring a portion to see what it actually looks like in your bowl. If you’re grating cheese, this is four level tablespoons. Natural, unprocessed meat is healthier, so choose steak over sausages.100g, or about 10 chips, should be your limit. And FYI, the thicker they are, the less unhealthy they are (and lay off the salt a bit).
This is about half a standard chocolate bar, so split it with a friend. Don’t crunch a massive bag into a mug – you’re only cheating your health! Eating two portions of oily fish, like mackerel or salmon, every week is ideal. If you’re eating dried fruit, a serving is 1 level tablespoon.
Imagine how big that dried apricot would be if it were hydrated, and let that be your guide. Try eating from a smaller bowl to make a single portion feel more satisfying. Raw, unsalted nuts are the healthiest kind, or 1tbsp of peanut butter is great too. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat – that’s the ‘good’ kind.
We’re talking cooked here, so allow for dried pasta and rice to expand. Fill the rest of your plate with salad and you can enjoy pizza without feeling deprived. The NHS recommends no more than 30g of sugar per day, which includes healthier sugar sources like fruit juice and honey.
- Vegetables are the only thing you simply can’t eat too much of, as they’re very nutrient-dense and low in calories.
- Go for a substantial salad, not a garnish.
- This is probably a lot less than you normally drink: 125ml is less than 1/5 a bottle of wine.
- Are you getting five glasses out of every bottle? If you’re not sure exactly what this looks like, use a measure.
Yogurt is a good source of calcium, but beware yogurt with added sugar.20 What a healthy plate looks like We need nutrients from a variety of food groups, which is why the NHS recommends ” as a visual guide to your meals: 1/3 of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, 1/3 wholegrains, like bread, rice and pasta and 1/3 protein-based foods, including meat, fish, eggs, beans and dairy.

How often should you 3-bet in poker?
When should you 3-bet? – It is easy to understand 3-betting for value. When playing solid, aggressive poker, a good rule is to always 3-bet your strongest hands. This allows you to play much larger pots with your strongest hands, and it balances your 3-bet range when you want to include bluffs and weaker hands.
- This is just scratching the surface of 3-bet theory, however.
- When you are deciding to 3-bet, you must look at the hand range that your opponent is opening from each position using the unopened preflop raised statistic (UOPFR).
- Using a hand range program like Equilab, you can estimate the range of hands they are opening, and decide what range of hands to flat call or re-raise with.
In order to profitably flat call your opponent’s opening range, you ought to have hands strong enough to have an equity advantage against their range. (Equity just means your chance of winning the pot based on the strength of your hand.) This equity advantage combined with your positional advantage postflop needs to be large enough to overcome the fact that you have a capped range against their uncapped range.
When choosing hands to re-raise in a polarized strategy (which will be explained further below), you need to be raising hands that are stronger than their range (value) and slightly too weak to call (your bluffs). It does not make sense to start 3-bet bluffing as a beginner with a hand like 34 suited.
It is much better to use a hand like A4 suited, which does much better against their calling range, while also blocking their strongest hands. For example, if you are all in preflop against KK with your bluff hand of A4 suited, you win roughly a third of the time! The additional advantage of using a hand like A4s in your bluffing range is that it makes it less likely for your opponent to have strong hands like AK or AA, because you have one of the only four aces in the deck. Before you attempt a 3-bet, however, you need to understand the relevant poker statistics and their acronyms in poker tracking software such as Poker Copilot. They are:
Fold to 3-bet preflop in position (F3B IP) ; Fold to 3-bet preflop out of position (F3B OOP) ; Folded to cbet on flop in 3-bet+ pot (FCB_3) ; 4-bet preflop (4B).

How many chips do I need for 10 players?
Without chips, there won’t be much to your home game, since there will be nothing to play for. For maximum enjoyment in a tournament, you must take several things into consideration when deciding on chip distribution.
In this article you will learn about:
How many chips you need. How many chips each player should have at the beginning. What to take into consideration if you are planning a rebuy tournament. Chip exchange. |
Printable overviews For three common tournament variants, we have prepared a printable practical overview in PDF format, which takes into account the game length and the number of players: Overview: Chip distribution and Blindstructure For a normal game of poker at home (6-10 players), it is recommended that you have a suitcase with 500 poker chips. For less than 6 players, you can use 300 chips, but remember that at some point you may want to invite more players or try rebuy tournaments. It is therefore not a bad idea to get a larger suitcase straight away as they don’t cost much more than a small one. In a commercial suitcase you’ll normally find between 3 and 5 different chip colors. This is so that the values of the chips are easy to distinguish. Particularly for longer poker games, where the blinds become relatively high, it is useful to have more than just 3 colours, so that you can exchange chips later (see Chiprace). At the beginning of a tournament, every player should have at least 50 big blinds. With fewer chips, the blinds quickly become too high to play reasonable poker. Naturally, you can start off with more chips: you could do this with approximately 100 big blinds. An important aspect is how long you want the tournament to last – the more chips each player starts with, the longer the game. As the blinds rise, it is often helpful to trade the small value chips for those with higher value or you’ll end up with a lot of “small change” in front of you. For instance, you begin with blinds of 500/1,000. Every player therefore needs some chips worth 500.
When blinds reach 5,000/10,000, these chips will simply become annoying and should be exchanged for a 1,000 chip, or ones of even higher value. If you have a tournament with rebuys to organise, you shouldn’t distribute all the chips, but keep some out of the game to begin with. First, you should consider how often each player may rebuy chips.
If you play with unlimited chips you’ll need more than if you play a game with just one rebuy + add-ons. With pro-players at the table you should have enough chips for two rebuys and an add-on. It might be the case that some players go broke and rebuy more often, but some will do so just once or not at all.
- LIMITING TO 1 REBUY + 1 ADD-ON Here you logically need enough chips for only 1 rebuy and an add-on.
- These ones should be available since you have to assume each player will both rebuy and add-on.
- HOW BIG SHOULD THE REBUY AND ADD-ON BE? A rebuy is usually just as big as the starting stack.
- The add-on can be just as big, but it can also be bigger, for instance 1.5x the starting stack.
HOW LONG SHOULD THE REBUY PHASE LAST? You should allow rebuys for as long as it is worthwhile. This means for as long as someone who has just rebought to be able to continue in a reasonable way. If the blinds are 2,000/4,000, it wouldn’t be worthwhile for someone to rebuy a stack of 10,000 chips, since he will probably go broke very quickly with just 2 ½ big blinds.
Now you know how to distribute chips at the start of a tournament. Remember that it always depends on how long you want the tournament to last: the more time you have, the more chips each player should receive. Less than 50 big blinds is not practical, since the tournament is then reduced to mere gambling and has little to do with poker.
For three common tournament variants, we have produced a printable handout tabulating the required information. This will help you with chip distribution and blind structure and it can be found as a PDF file here: Overview: Chip distribution and Blindstructure The next article deals with the blind structure, i.e.

How many big blinds should you start with?
Blinds in cash games – In cash games, otherwise known as, blinds primarily serve to ensure all players are subject to some minimum, ongoing cost for participating in the game. This encourages players to play hands they otherwise might not, thereby increasing the average size of the pots and, by extension, increasing the amount of earned by the cardroom hosting the game.
In cash games, the amount of the blinds are normally fixed for each particular table and will not change for the duration of the game. However, many cardrooms will allow blind levels to change in cases where all players unanimously agree to a change. Larger cardrooms will often include tables with different blind levels to give players the option of playing at whatever stakes they are most comfortable with.
In, blinds range from as little as one U.S. cent to USD1,000 or more. The minimum and maximum buy-in at a table is usually set in relation to the big blind. At live games, the minimum buy-in is usually between 20 and 50 big blinds, while the maximum buy-in is usually between 100 and 250 big blinds.
