Does World Poker Tour Use Real Money?
Are Poker Tournaments Played With Real Money? Poker tournaments can be very confusing for those new to the game. Although they’re probably the most popular format out there, new poker fans frequently don’t understand how they work and one very common question they have is: “are poker tournaments played with real money?” It’s not hard to understand where the confusion comes from as players in big tournaments will often have millions in chips in front of them.
So if you are wondering are poker tournaments played with real money the simplest and the most straightforward answer is: Poker tournaments are not played with real money. When signing up to a tournament, a fixed sum of money is exchanged for chips that can be used to play the game. A player is eliminated from a tournament if they run out of chips and a real-money prize is only awarded if they place within the prize pool.
In poker tournaments, the prize money is created from all the cash paid by the participants and is later distributed to those who perform the best. Tournament chips have no monetary value themselves and are simply used to “keep score”. Once you are out of chips, you’re out of the tournament.

Do WPT players use their own money?
Do professional poker players use their own money? This question depends mainly on the game format, stakes being played, and player goals. It’s easier to bankroll yourself for cash games as they have fewer swings than tournaments. Likewise, if you are happy with the stakes you are playing and have no desire to move up, it will be easier to play with your own money.
- On the other hand, if you play tournaments with huge field sizes, varying buy-ins, or want to move up in stakes, then playing with your own money will be possible but more complex.
- What we know about here at Pocarr are multi-table tournaments (MTT’s).
- Most of our players have a desire to improve and move up in stakes.
For this reason, many are giving up a percentage of their profits not just because they need the financial backing but because they want the coaching we provide. Another large section of our players want their own money to be working for them in other ways.
- They may be more comfortable having their money in real estate or stocks and prefer to leave the poker swings to us.
- Lastly, many players need financial staking and do not have the means to play the games they want to play without financial assistance.
- In the MTT community, it is widespread for professional poker players to be staked.
It is far less common in cash games, and it seems most are using their own money. : Do professional poker players use their own money?

Where do professional poker players get their money?
Other Earnings – As is the case with the top players of other sports, the best poker players will also be able to earn a significant sum of money via other avenues. One of these is sponsorship deals, with the biggest players being paid large sums of money by online poker sites to represent their brand.
- The value of these sponsorship deals varies depending on the individual – the more famous they are, the more they’ll get paid.
- Other businesses can also use poker players for advertising, especially if their product is linked with the poker industry.
- Some poker players also earn considerable sums of money through coaching,
There are many who will pay handsomely for the knowledge a top professional player can impart, and they see hiring a coach as an investment, which will be paid back when they start to consistently earn money from playing poker. Next, you’ll also find that many poker players will pay for some of a tournament’s entry fee for another player, especially in tournaments with larger buy-ins.
- For example, someone might stake 10% of the buy-in for another player, and they will receive 10% of all winnings, should the player make it into the money.
- Back the right person in the right tournament and they could find themselves making some huge sums of money.
- Finally, and perhaps most considerably, nearly all poker players nowadays earn a significant portion of their income from playing online.
While some of the major online tournaments are included when working out the list of top earning poker players, most are not. If you’re going to become a top-level poker player, you need to get used to the idea that much of your work will be done sitting behind a screen.

Beginning with the Lucky Hearts Poker Open, starting Friday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL, every World Poker Tour event will now count towards the WPT® POY race. This includes every Main Tour event, as well as every WPTDeepStacks™ event. “From Florida to Amsterdam, and Australia to Las Vegas, every time a player sits down to play a World Poker Tour branded event, they’re going to be competing to become Player of the Year,” said Adam Pliska, WPT CEO.
“This is yet another pillar in the 20th anniversary celebration for the WPT and the players.” Along with the inclusion of all WPT events, the previous scoring system, which takes into account a player’s finishing position and the total prize pool of the event, has been refined to account for the wider range of tournaments involved.
All players who finish in the money of any WPT event will earn POY points. A breakdown of the scoring system can be found here, Players are competing for $30,000 in POY prizes this season. The eventual winner will receive a $15,000 WPT Passport, which can be used in any WPT event around the world. The runner-up and third-place finisher will take home a respective $10,000 and $5,000 WPT Passport.
“We wanted to make sure that our new system gives everybody a chance to put in the work and chase down the POY title,” said Matt Savage, WPT Executive Tour Director. “On top of the honor that comes from winning Player of the Year, we wanted to have a worthy prize attached to it.” Previous World Poker Tour Player of the Year winners include Daniel Negreanu (Season III), Anthony Zinno (Season XIII), Brian Altman (Season XVIII), and the recently crowned Season XIX POY, Jake Ferro.
- Season XX begins Friday with the $3,500 buy-in Lucky Hearts Poker Open Championship Event at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL.
- The event has a $2 million guaranteed prize pool and two starting flights.

How do you pay for WSOP entry?
How to Register In-Person – Registration: The main registration area is located in the Champagne Ballroom, near the front end of the Paris Convention Center. This office opens on Tuesday, May 31 at 9:00am, and will remain open 24 hours a day, non-stop through July 20th.
- Guests are required to present valid picture identification, along with their Caesars Rewards card and payment to enter events.
- Loyalty Card: All players are required to have a Caesars Rewards loyalty card to enter WSOP events.
- To obtain a card for new players, or to request a reprint of your card if you have previously signed up for one, players will visit the Player Services are in the Champagne Ballroom or visit one of the card reprint kiosks.
A valid picture identification such as a state-issued driver license or a country-issued passport is required for a Caesars Rewards card. It is important to note, players who lost/forgot to bring their physical Caesars Rewards card with them to the WSOP, should request a re-print of their card and NOT obtain a new card.
- Caesars Rewards re-print kiosks will also be available in the Champagne Ballroom, allowing those a quick way to get a physical card when that’s the only need they have.
- This should allow for a smoother process to get a Caesars Rewards card, register for an event and cash out for any events when a payout is earned.
Methods of payment for the required buy-in(s) for WSOP events are as follows: (1) cash, (2) credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express), (3) wire transfers or cashier’s checks drawn from the registrant’s accredited bank account and made out to Participant or Paris, (4) Paris or Bally’s gaming chips, (5) WSOP Tournament Buy-In Chips, or Tournament Buy-In Credit.
Additional fees will be incurred on all credit/debit card/TBIC transactions. Participants using credit/debit cards must have a valid ID that matches the cardholder name present on the credit card used for the transaction. Addition of ACH to Online Registration: For the second time in 2022, players utilizing the BravoPokerLive.com online registration system to register and fund event purchases will be able to utilize their bank account to pay, via a domestic guaranteed ACH for U.S.
residents, and a similar but slightly different method for international users. This method is commonly known as the “ACH” method of payment, as the funds come directly from a user’s bank account. This method comes with a 2.75% payment processing fee, along with a $3 per event transaction amount.
(None of the extra fees go to the WSOP. They go to the service carriers providing these options.) Wire transfers, cashier’s checks, and credit/debit cards/TBIC remain payment methods for online registration, with all transactions coming with a $3 per event additional fee and credit/debit cards adding 2.95%/3.95% depending on card issuer.
For international credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard or Discover), there will be a 3.50% fee, in addition to the $3 processing fee for each transaction.

Can you cash out in WSOP?
As part of our commitment to provide truly superior service, Caesars Interactive Entertainment New Jersey LLC (the “Company or “we”) will make every effort necessary to ensure that withdrawal requests are processed quickly and efficiently. We utilize industry leading security and encryption technologies available to ensure that transactions and financial information are kept secure.
Withdrawal Process The withdrawal policy dictates that a player is required to verify his payment method before a withdrawal can be made from his account. This validation process prevents potential online fraud and ensures that funds are returned to the player’s personal account. Upon entering the withdrawal amount in the cashier, the player will be required to authenticate his username and verify that he is the account holder.
This requires the entry of the player’s username, password, and unique token number that was sent to the player’s email address. When this process is successfully completed, a confirmation message with a withdrawal reference number will be sent. At WSOP.com, the method(s) by which a player may withdraw funds is dependent upon the deposit payment method(s) used by the player in the past, and the amount of those deposit(s).
Withdrawal requests will be automatically paid directly to the verified payment method(s) by which a player submitted his deposit(s) to his WSOP.com account, up to the “player transaction balance” (defined as “any total sum a player has deposited to his WSOP.com account, less previous withdrawals and/or refunds to this same payment method”).
However, in instances where a player has used a credit card, debit card, PayNearMe or Mazooma to submit his original deposit(s) to his WSOP.com account, we will be unable to send withdrawals back to these payment methods. We will be able to send the requested withdrawn funds to another payment method of the player’s choosing, which has been previously verified in accordance with this Withdrawal Policy*.
- Bank transfer (ACH);
- In-person withdrawal at the Caesars Atlantic City cashier’s cage;
- PayPal;
- Play+; or
- Any other method approved by the Company, subject to NJ gaming regulations.
An example of how this may work in practice is as follows. Assume deposits are made in the following manner:
- $100 using a bank transfer from bank account X
- $50 using a bank transfer from bank account Y
- $200 using a bank transfer from bank account Z
After engaging in game play, the player then requests a withdrawal of $600 using a bank transfer. The funds will be paid out in the following manner:
- $100 to bank account X
- $50 to bank account Y
- $200 to bank account Z
- Remaining funds ($250) to the bank account the player specifies, which has been previously verified in accordance with this Withdrawal Policy
Please note the following important withdrawal information:
- Multiple withdrawals requested within 24-48 hours via the same payment method may be combined as one payment.
- Withdrawals will be posted as separate transactions and will not cancel charges resulting from a player’s previous deposit(s) to a WSOP.com account.
- If a player has not actively used the chosen withdrawal method to deposit to his account for more than 12 months, that specific withdrawal option may no longer be available.
- We will not process your withdrawal request, if a request is for less than the minimum allowable amount:
- The minimum bank transfer (ACH) withdrawal amount is $10;
- The minimum withdrawal via Play+ is $20.
- The minimum withdrawal via PayPal is $20.
- There is no minimum withdrawal amount at the Caesars Atlantic City cashier’s cage.
- We reserve the right to enforce a 24-hour waiting period between cage withdrawal requests, subject to applicable laws and gaming regulations.
- Player authorization and/or some documentation will be required to process withdrawal requests, and we may ask that the player sign a list of all previous deposits to his WSOP.com account.
- Withdrawal method verification must be completed within 14 days or the withdrawal will be reversed and the funds returned to the player’s bankroll.
- We reserve the right to delay and/or discontinue the processing of a player’s withdrawal requests until final verification has been received for any outstanding deposits which such player has made.
- A player may withdraw bonus funds or winnings from such funds, only after all applicable bonus and promotion policy requirements have been met.
- We do not charge a fee for any withdrawal method; however, the player’s bank or payment processor may levy a fee to process the withdrawal, for which the player is responsible.
- We reserve the right to delay or cease the processing of a player’s withdrawal request, until final approval has been received for any outstanding deposit transactions.
- If your approved withdrawal request exceeds the Withdrawal Transaction Limit set by a payment method processor but does not exceed the Withdrawal Daily Limit set by such payment method processor, the withdrawal request amount will be paid in installments on the same day. In the event that your approved withdrawal request exceeds the Withdrawal Daily Limit set by a payment method processor, the withdrawal request amount will be paid in installments that will split into multiple days, which for the avoidance of doubt, is always subject to the payment method processor’s Withdrawal Daily Limit.
* Due to regulations imposed on, or policies adopted by Mazooma and some issuers of credit cards and debit cards, the Company does not pay withdrawals to credit cards, debit cards, PayNearMe and Mazooma accounts. Verification Documents In some cases, depending on the deposit method used to fund the account, the player may be asked for one or more of the below documents, or additional documents not included in the list below, in order to process the withdrawal.
- Credit/debit cards: A copy of the front and back of the credit/debit card(s) used to fund the account. Ensure that all details are clearly legible to enable prompt and accurate verification. For security purposes, block out the middle eight numbers on the front of the card copy and the three-digit security code on the back of the card copy.
- Proof of bank account number (ACH): A copy of a bank statement or voided check with name and account number clearly visible.
- Proof of address: A recent document showing the player’s full name and address as registered on his WSOP.com account. This may be submitted in the form of a utility bill or a credit card statement. If the document provided is a credit card statement, please block out the eight middle numbers of the credit card.
- Photo ID: A copy of a valid government issued passport, driver’s license, or state non-driver ID card. Ensure that the name, photograph, and signature are clearly visible on the document.
Processing and Reversing Withdrawals A withdrawal request may be reversed by a player within up to 2 business days following such request. Thereafter, the withdrawal will be processed by us and may no longer be reversed. The timeframe for such withdrawn funds to be received by the player will be dependent on the withdrawal method selected.
Where account verification is required for completing a player’s withdrawal request, we will return any pending withdrawals to such player’s bankroll until we have completed the verification of the players account. If the player’s withdrawal remains in a pending status and is not returned to the players bankroll immediately, the player will have 14 days to complete the account verification before the player’s withdrawal is reversed and returned to his bankroll To reverse a requested withdrawal, a player must: (i) login to his WSOP.com account using his username and password; (ii) go to the Cashier and select “Withdrawal”, where a list of pending withdrawal requests will appear in the “Awaiting Process” box; and (iii) select any unprocessed withdrawal request by clicking on it, and then selecting “Reverse Withdrawal”.
The withdrawal request will be reversed and the funds promptly returned to the player’s WSOP.com bankroll. In the event that a player cancels a withdrawal request, such player will bear full responsibility for any subsequent wager of such sum. We shall have no obligation to refund a player any amounts which have been cancelled by him/her and subsequently wagered.

- The minimum bank transfer (ACH) withdrawal amount is $10;
- The minimum withdrawal via Play+ is $20.
- The minimum withdrawal via PayPal is $20.
- There is no minimum withdrawal amount at the Caesars Atlantic City cashier’s cage.

The timeframe for such withdrawn funds to be received by the player will be dependent on the withdrawal method selected.

- If the player’s withdrawal remains in a pending status and is not returned to the players bankroll immediately, the player will have 14 days to complete the account verification before the player’s withdrawal is reversed and returned to his bankroll To reverse a requested withdrawal, a player must: (i) login to his WSOP.com account using his username and password; (ii) go to the Cashier and select “Withdrawal”, where a list of pending withdrawal requests will appear in the “Awaiting Process” box; and (iii) select any unprocessed withdrawal request by clicking on it, and then selecting “Reverse Withdrawal”.
