The Light and How to Swing It: How to tank as a Paladin | September 4, 2007 11:00 PM Before the Burning Crusade, Paladin tanks didn’t really exist. Players certainly could spec into Protection (and some did, I’m sure), but the player base as a whole wasn’t ready to even accept the possibility that a Paladin could or should tank. The gear didn’t really exist for it, the Protection tree was weak, and most seemed willing to accept their role as heal / buff bots in raids.Protection was even more laughable than Retribution is today, if you can believe it.

You think finding a group as a Retribution Paladin these days is tough? I can’t think of a single group I ran in before BC that had a Paladin tank, and I ran a lot of groups.However, that all changed with the introduction of the Burning Crusade, and the redone talent trees. With the new gear and talents introduced in Burning Crusade, not only could Paladins tank – they were good at it.

Really good. In some situations, even better than Warriors.But this isn’t about comparing the tanking classes – this is about how one goes about tanking with a Paladin.First off, there are some strengths and weaknesses to consider: paladins are very good at tanking multiple or fast hitting mobs at one time, and since they generate threat through holy damage they have an edge over other tanks against mobs with a high AC.

  1. However, they have lower base health than warriors or druids, they require mana in order to use their threat generating abilities (which is in limited supply, unlike rage, which is virtually unlimited), and they have to work a bit harder to become uncrushable (more on that later).
  2. Luckily, paladins get a skill called Spiritual Attunement, which gives them mana back when they are healed, and does help keep them from running out of mana during long battles.

Unfortunately, overcoming some of the other weaknesses isn’t quite as easy.

Becoming Uncrushable Compensating for Lower Health Generating Threat

By default, every attack made by a boss mob has a 15% chance of being a crushing blow. Crushing blows do 150% more damage, and can’t be mitigated by defense. The only way to remove the possibility of receiving a crushing blow is to push it off the attack table – and the only way to do that is to have a combined miss / dodge / parry / block chance of 102.4%.This seems crazy, but it is possible.

  1. Warriors do have an easier time of it, because their Shield Block skill raises block chance by 75%.
  2. The Paladin equivalent, Holy Shield, only boosts block chance by 30%.
  3. As such, many Paladins must stack more Block Rating than Warriors.
  4. Although it is possible to gain more Parry and Dodge, items with Block are far easier to obtain.If you’re looking to become Uncrushable, you need to have a combined Avoidance (Miss/Dodge/Parry/Block) of 72.4%.

This means getting at least 490 Defense (Defense increases your chance to be missed, dodge, parry or block by,04% per 1 point), and a combined dodge/parry/block rate of 50% or so. Once you’ve done that, Holy Shield will provide the last 30% block needed, and the chance of you received a crushing blow becomes slim indeed.There are a couple of ways to do this – namely, raise your health with enchants, gems, and leg armor.

In addition, the talent Ardent Defender will reduce incoming damage by 30% when your health falls below 35%. This effectively gives you around 30% more health. It has been rumored that Paladins will see a way to increase their health soon, but until that time try to make up for it as best you can.Ah, finally, the real meat and potatoes of Paladin tanking.

Although paladins generate threat through holy damage, it is far more important to focus on becoming uncrushable first, so don’t stock up on +damage gear. The best thing to do is to get a decent weapon (I recommend the, as it has good stamina, spelldamage and is relatively easy to get) and enchant it with +40 spelldamage.

Some of the gear you’ll pick up when gearing up is bound to have some +damage on it as well as tanking stats, and that’s fine.Always have Righteous Fury up when you’re tanking! Properly talented, you’ll take 6% less damage, your holy damage will generate 90% more threat, and more threat is always a good thing.

Many of the skills paladins use to tank are reactive – meaning you generate threat when you get hit. Here’s what I suggest you do when tanking:

Use Retribution Aura – this causes holy damage when you get hit. No brainer. Use Seal of Righteousness, and Judge it when you can. Again, no brainer – this causes holy damage every time you hit something. Pull with Avenger’s Shield when you can. This causes holy damage to 3 targets, and is ranged. Consecrate when appropriate. If you’ve got a lot of CC around, you may not want to use this, but it is great when tanking multiple mobs. Use Blessing of Sanctuary on yourself. This causes holy damage when you block attacks. You should be blocking a lot, so this is a great way to constantly generate threat. Use Holy Shield whenever you can. Aside from increasing your chance to block by 30%, any blocks made while Holy Shield is up do damage and generates even more threat. Take the Improved Holy Shield talent to make this even more effective.

That’s pretty much it – focus on becoming Uncrushable, get a bit of spelldamage and increase your health as much as possible. More importantly, don’t let anyone tell you that paladins can’t tank, because we certainly can! It just requires the right type of gear.

Ret early on but Prot can become faster at higher levels since you can pull more while questing and live. Level as ret since you will get to 70 faster, then respec and roll through those dungeons as prot.

Can I Sim Myself? – Offensively, yes you can. SimulationCraft supports Protection Paladin DPS, and this is the recommended way to determine if an item, trait, or talent is an upgrade for your damage output. As traits are in constant flux, I would maybe not trust it fully at the moment.

Defensively, no. It is not recommended to sim tanks for defense in general. There are simply too many factors and variables that go into accurately modelling a tanking situation, and there is no single metric that will tell you “this item or trait will make you more tanky.” For example: something can reduce your overall damage taken, but not improve your ability to survive spike damage, two factors of tanking which will vary in importance depending on the encounter.

You will be much better off following the recommendations of a guide with respect to defensive gearing than you will by following sims.9.

How much haste does a prot pally need?

What’s a good haste breakpoint – prot I put everything into damage on my tank. I know I could sim myself and will but wanted to hear any feedback of secondaries applied in practice in keys or in raid. Thus far, I’ve just stacked haste over everything and mastery over all else and the results have been pretty solid.

I want to know if there’s more I can do. Both setups typically have me at ~38% haste before other buffs, ~20-22% mastery, and around 10% vers. My crit is minimal mostly coming from the tier legs. For trinkets typically in raid I actually run both IQD and First Sigil as Venthyr since I have no access to the sylv trinket and using both during that first hollow burst just feels good.

Other trinket options include a Soleah’s and an elegy at 272 and 265 respectively. For dungeons I typically run one defensive trinket, usually Scale since Scale balances the defensive kit out well. Talents are your standard talents you’d expect to see in dungeons or raids respectively with maybe the one caveat being that I still take holy shield for defense (and some offense from 4set) for both forms of content instead of taking the more consistent redoubt for the added strength to parse better.

Should I convert some of that haste to mastery for more attack power? Anyone have any of their breakdowns they could share? I would most definitely trade haste for more mastery in your situation. Mastery gems and enchants should be enough for now. I would not sacrifice ilevel to do so (if that’s an option).

Beyond that I think your stat allocation is great! I’ve been experimenting with 22% haste in dungeons with all the free HP. I typically run 25 haste, 30 mastery, whatever vers I can get (18-20%). Glafin: Both setups typically have me at ~38% haste before other buffs, ~20-22% mastery, and around 10% vers. 1 Like Haste should be around 20%+ stopping no higher than about 25%, Mastery around 30+% (mine was 37, but with the crap set pieces I lost some of my good stats). Crit not really that important to us. Glad to help. Should check out WoWhead and Icyveins they both have a pretty good idea of stat breakdowns. I did! Also checked Bloodmallet for stat breakdowns. Ilvl doesn’t make much of a difference for neck and rings because they give stamina instead of strength. Sims also are not that accurate for tanking unless you are just looking for dps potential.1 Like noted. In that case I may just take the crafted. It would normalize my haste better and put more in mastery Agree with haste but crit does increases parry which gives charge of grand crusader, plus some juicy heals.

  • It has uses but rng not a good thing to rely upon for survivability.
  • With how mastery is working, Ive been skipping verse and full mastery after ~25ish haste.
  • Verse just has a low return rate, % per stat, so unless you never stand in consecration or take attacks to the back, then mastery best bang for buck.

People protected by Blessing of Protection can still cast spells. While this skill is effective in PvP against warriors, rogues, and hunters, they all have abilities that can hit through the shield. Those abilities include Kick, Thunderclap, Pummel, etc. Players protected by Blessing of Protection lose aggro while under its duration. Tanking paladins can use this as a last resort method of aggro management, or because of a player’s inability to perform melee actions through the shield, an effective way to reign in a melee dps class who is unable to control their own aggro. The threat reduction only lasts for the duration of the blessing however, so a tanking paladin needs to make sure they are able to generate enough threat to keep aggro when the blessing expires. The paladin ability Judgement is considered to be a physical ability and cannot be used while Blessing of Protecion is active.

Single Target Tanking – Paladins are also very capable boss tanks thanks largely to spiritual attunement, there are many bosses where because of the healing you will be receiving will your Mana pool will be nearly unlimited. Again it is important to note that the balance you establish between threat and survivability gearing wise is largely subjective and there is rarely an exact ‘correct’ choice, your gearing set up for tanking bosses may be drastically different than what you use when AoE tanking.

Seal of the Crusader Seal of the Crusader is only worth using to maintain the Judgement of the Crusader debuff up on the mob, if you are playing with a Ret paladin you will not have to worry about keeping this debuff up but if you do not have one you need to make sure to keep this debuff up as it is a massive spell damage/threat increase. Seal of Righteousness is the seal you will most often be using when tanking bosses, the flat damage increase that scales well with your gear makes this seal the largest threat per second increase both auto-attacking and judging. Consecration is another large source of threat, making sure you are positioned in a way that you can ensure the mob you are tanking will be inside the ground effect for its entire duration will greatly increase your threat. Judgement is a powerful tool that both provides a good amount of snap threat but also applying or maintaining one of the many seal debuffs. Holy Shield is an extremely powerful short cooldown ability that considerably increases your block chance and deals damage every time you block an attack while it is active. Greater Blessing of Kings Greater Blessing of Kings is a bit of an unorthodox way to generate threat but is very strong. In a situation where you are tanking a boss you will often find yourself without a spell off cooldown to cast, Greater Blessing of Kings can fill this void, this spell should only really be used as a filler when no other ability is available. Its only major downside being the fact it costs a considerable amount of Mana but if you are tanking a boss the amount of healing you will receive will likely negate the Mana spent on this ability. Avenger’s Shield is a strong burst of threat and damage but it is important to make sure you are not going to get meleed when casting this because you cannot mitigate damage by blocking, dodging or parrying when you are casting a spell.

Tanking Dungeons as Retri in TBC I want to play Retribution Paladin in TBC but as being a DPS it would take much time to find a dungeon group. My question is if I bring a tank gear with me would I tank the heroic/normal dungeons in TBC? You’ll be lacking 2 top tier tools for survivability and aggro.

Maybe once ppl overgear the dungeons it might be a chance but while leveling I wouldn’t suggest you to do it, especially for heroics.2 Likes No, this is not a thing, you need to play Prot. That goes for Warriors too, you can’t tank as a Fury/Arms Warrior by equipping gear. You do this as Ret/Arms/Fury and first the group will die from agro, then you will die from being a paper tank.

Maybe if you wanna do some overgeared easy dungeons, or offtank a trash mob in a raid yeah fine, but not tanking heroics or raid bosses.1 Like 1 Like Schmürzeli: With the right team and several tiers of item above the content while taking considerably more time you can due anything, sure. But if you want to tank a dungeon in any normal situation you need to be a tank. Nobody is going to stick around for your fluffy the hunter pet to lose agro to a single chain heal.

You can somewhat tank normal dungeons in a different spec if you have the appropriate gear, but you will have way more problems than running in prot.Depends on the dungeon as well, I wouldn’t be tanking SL or Shaterred Halls on normal in an offspec if I could avoid it.Heroics No.

Is it faster to level in TBC than classic?

TBC vs Vanilla leveling speed? Tried looking this up but never really found any answers that were satisfying. Was just wondering how the levelling experience was in tbc vs vanilla? I wanted to play classic, but I just couldn’t deal with how low the drop rates for quest items were and was wanting to know if TBC had better drop rates? I know it introduced quest hubs and more quests, but I personally don’t want to put in the time if drop rates for quest items are the same.

  • It’s roughly 25-30% faster due to the xp nerf and some better optimization of areas (aka elite zones being made non-elite so you can do more quests for more reward),
  • If it took you 6 days /played before expect yourself to get there near 4 days /played.1 Like Is there a difference in drop rates for quest items? That was a huge turn off for me was having to kill ie 25 boars for 8 meat to turn in for a quest.

That’s just a part of the old MMO style (aka Vanilla WoW, TBC, Korean MMOs, etc.) that you’ll have to get used to if you’re going to play TBC. Retail sped up leveling to such ridiculous levels that a lot of people were shocked at how much longer it takes in Classic.

  • It sounds like you were among them.
  • Unless you’re playing unhealthy levels, I wouldn’t expect to go from 1-70 in just a couple of days.
  • At the bare minimum, you’re looking at 100+ hours /played.
  • TBC leveling is basically 1/3rd faster than Vanilla, but you’re still going to have those RNG battles with fetch quests.

That being said, it’s widely considered their best expansion (usually tied with Wrath), so it’ll be worth it.1 Like TBC reduces EXP requirements by 30%, between levels 20 and 60 IIRC. There’s also a LOT more quests, like 100+ quests added to vanilla zones, so that you don’t run out of quests to do.

  2. There’s no such thing as killing “extra” boars.
  3. Those drop rates are planned.
  4. Just remember, those boars give XP, too.1 Like This.
  5. Eep in mind OP, that every boar you kill that doesn’t drop the quest item, still gets you a little bit closer to the next level.

Pre Cataclysm, the majority of leveling xp was not obtained from quests. The real leveling is from mob kills – quests just serve to direct you and give the mob kills purpose. It’s also worth noting that with the increased amount of quests, increased quest xp from 30-60, and the reduced xp to level, you likely will be able to skip a lot of quests that you find annoying.

Quests are just directions, but kills themselves are the bulk of your leveling.Low drop rates can be frustrating, especially in competitive areas for those drops (like the trolls in STV), but it’s only going to be more of the same in BC.As long as you can get in the mindset to just murderhobo everything in the area for EXP, you’ll level swiftly.

I know it introduced quest hubs and more quests, but I personally don’t want to put in the time if drop rates for quest items are the same.

  3. In Classic, there is a massive drought of content in the 30-60 range compared to the xp to level.
  4. I tend to burn out around level 30ish for that very reason as it just becomes more tedious than it is fun.

I love slow leveling – as long as there is enough content to justify it. In TBC it should be a MUCH more enjoyable experience in that regard, with the increased quest xp, Dustwallow quests, and less xp to level combined. It’s not going to be fast, especially by retail standards.

Can you tank as Ret spec TBC?

Re: Leveling a retribution paladin and tanking in dungeons – first of all, your health is rather low. I was sitting at 5.5k at around 57, and even then some mobs tend to hit hard (Fireguard Destroyers and such) The reason you seem to take much damage because if a mob hits for let’s say 200, you will see your health drop a lot more than a full prot tank.

Even at 57, there will be a difference between prot and ret. Yes you can tank as a ret, but it requires healers and dps that give you the chance to show that you can do it and keep it all going. Mostly it’s a pug issue. My tank is at 62 at the moment, and just over 8k unbuffed, and still people complain I have to low HP, I take to much damage etc (wearing 90% of the champion gear).

Don’t let the bads get to you, just keep going and you’ll be fine. Although I would suggest getting some more stamina 2010-04-26, 10:42 AM #6 Blademaster

Spec Choice – Every Paladin spec is useful in its own way and fills a role that is important to a group, but Retribution will be the best by far for solo leveling, while also allowing you to off-heal when needed. If you are going to be leveling with other people, Holy can be a good choice.

Different bosses hit for a different amount of damage or have different abilities and, as such, your survival target varies all the time. The rule of thumb is to gear with the most challenging encounter in mind, and swap mitigation pieces in favor of threat pieces for encounters where the bar for survival is lower.

  • For example, Magtheridon and Prince Malchezaar are notable hard hitters of Phase 1 and you want to gear around them for the success of your raids.
  • However, when facing lesser threats such as Moroes or Terestian Illhoof, who hit for a third of Magtheridon’s attacks, you can dial down the survival by a lot because their worst-case-scenario requires half as much EHP.

For this reason, the most effective way to increase threat as a Protection Warrior is to guarantee that our abilities hit the target for these built-in threat values to land as reliably as possible.

To achieve this goal, the most important stats are hit and expertise rating, respectively reducing chances to miss and be dodged or parried. Because expertise reduces both chances to be dodged and parried at the same time, up to the soft cap of 26 expertise at which point dodge chances are fully removed, the value of expertise to hit the target more consistently is twice the value of hit rating which only reduces misses.

Vitality increases your total Strength by 10%.

Expertise rating reduces the chance that your attacks are dodged and parried. Expertise works in a very unique way compared to every other ratings. Each point of Expertise skill reduces dodge/parry chance by 0.25% and you need 3.9423 rating for 1 expertise skill.

Gearing as a Protection Warrior Tank is all about balancing your gear between survival and threat based on your target EHP, DTPS and Threat/damage for each encounter. If you want to make the most out of your character, it is important to carry gear alternatives to adapt on the fly between trash mobs, low damage bosses and rage starved scenarios, high damage bosses and rage capped scenarios, high threat requirements or avoidance, etc.

A common misconception from Classic Vanilla is that you have to reach your hit cap at all costs because missing an ability used to be disastrous for your snap threat. While landing your abilities is still very important in TBC obviously, this expansion also introduces Misdirection which is the perfect counter to pull variance.

Plus, the addition of Devastate to your toolkit makes missing your specials less impactful for your TPS overall. Consider hit and expertise rating as bonuses to increase your threat only after you made sure your survival is sufficient for the content.

  1. Another misconception, dating from original TBC this time, is that resilience only works in PvP and a Protection Warrior should only wear defense rating up to 490 to achieve crit immunity.
  2. The truth is, resilience is a much more effective way to reach your crit immunity with less item budget allocation and fewer pieces than defense.

Plus, the PvP gear itemization Gladiator’s Plate Chestpiece is excellent for a Protection Warrior, packed with armor, stamina, hit and crit ratings which are all essential stats for your EHP and TPS. That is not to say that PvP gear and arenas are mandatory, as there are more than enough items to pick from in raids, but any amount of PvP gear will greatly help reach your desired stats.

Finally, it is important to remember to be a team player. Raiding is a group effort and no one likes a self-centered main tank who gobbles up all the loot based on outdated principles. Can you DPS as a prot Paladin?

Can I Sim Myself? – Offensively, yes you can. SimulationCraft supports Protection Paladin DPS, and this is the recommended way to determine if an item, trait, or talent is an upgrade for your damage output. As traits are in constant flux, I would maybe not trust it fully at the moment.

  • Defensively, no.
  • It is not recommended to sim tanks for defense in general.
  • There are simply too many factors and variables that go into accurately modelling a tanking situation, and there is no single metric that will tell you “this item or trait will make you more tanky.” For example: something can reduce your overall damage taken, but not improve your ability to survive spike damage, two factors of tanking which will vary in importance depending on the encounter.

You will be much better off following the recommendations of a guide with respect to defensive gearing than you will by following sims.9.

Introduction – Champions of the light, bring powerful blessings, potent heals, and an array of auras that make them excellent at supporting a raid group. Paladins are also clad in plate armor, making them quite durable and hard to kill in, Perhaps most importantly though, Paladins have a wide array of powerful cooldowns, some of which are considered to be among the most powerful in the game.

Protection Paladins are one of three possible tank specs in WoW Classic, along with and, For raiding, Protection Paladins are far and away considered the worst of all three. Protection Paladins are considered to be not viable in raiding for a number of reasons, most notably because they do not have a taunt ability.

This makes swapping with other tanks on enemies and bosses impossible, which makes them nonviable for many bosses and raids in WoW Classic. Paladins also are the only tank to use Mana, making their spell usage severely limited compared to other tanks since they need to worry about running out of Mana.

While Protection Paladins are not good for raiding, they can be incredibly strong for lesser content, specifically in dungeons. With strong AoE and cooldowns, Protection Paladins can be good for tanking dungeons when they do not need to worry about managing threat with other tanks and need to hold multiple enemies at once.
